Yesterday I contacted Busch and Muller via their web site asking to purchase a replacement USB lead for their e-werk charging unit.

They've just emailed me to let me know that they are sending me one free of charge, pun not intended.

Wonderful.

How are you getting on with the e-werk? And do you have their cache battery?

I've used the e-werk for two years and it's performed faultessly powered by Shimano hub dynamos. It's aroused curiosity on a few campsites when fellow cyclists have spotted the strange looking block attached to the frame of my bike.

I don't have their cache battery because my charging needs are rather modest.

I'm about to acquire a bike with a SON Delux hub dynamo and I believe the output is slightly less than standard SON dynamos. There's only one way to find out how well it performs... a mini tour at Easter.

I have to admit, I've been so tempted by the e-werks for some time now, to power my Edge.

It IS a costly route, I know, but I'd hope it's the kind of purchase that once made, you'd never regret.

What does the E-werk power up?
Just about anything with an input voltage between 2.8V and 12.0V and charge rates between O.1A and 1.4A and which has a USB lead.
Some jiggery pokery is needed to charge iPhones I believe - possible the cache battery.

I have no regrets about mine. The after sales service is great. B&M sent me a lead within a week of receiving my enquiry.

I think so, yes. I believe some devices (like the iPhone) are a bit sensitive to power fluctuations and having the battery acting more-or-less as a buffer resolves this.

In truth, I don't need the variety of rates than the e-werks can deliver. I wouldn't say I never will but it's certainly not foreseeable. So, in that respect, I'd be paying for functionality I don't need.
