A friend of mine has a house with a long driveway and has a postbox fitted at the gate for the postman to leave the mail in.

He put a big dent and deep score in the side of his car when he caught on the pillar trying to get close enough to collect the mail without getting out of the car  but people aren't lazy really.

I don't go for the view that cars are OK but some drivers are a problem.

I think it's more the other way, the problem is the technology. Not only is the private car an inefficient solution to mobility but it monopolises travel in the UK (above 80% of transport miles) which tends to discourage or make impractical other modes of transport. Examples of discouraging being that travel- especially to the workplace outside of cities- is mostly done by private car and this is a normative choice; discouraging the choosing of alternative modes*. As the private car is the majority choice so commutes - by a number of mechanisms- tend to become longer and other modes are made impractical- for example requiring multiple changes of bus or train, or the distances are too far to cycle.

*This is a cycling forum, A lot of you cycle to work- but there are often threads on here about how colleagues can't figure out how you manage to ride seven miles or how brave/ insane you are etc. which suggest that cycling isn't the easiest of choices to make. At least it is a choice- I suspect for many driving isn't much of a choice at all. This is the problem.

A friend of mine used to live in a cul-de-sac with about 10 houses along each side of the street. There was a newsagent at the end of the road. You can see where this is going, can't you ...

Yep, one of his neighbours used to drive to the shop, and then reverse back to his house! This was an able-bodied person and he did it in good weather as well as bad ...

PS Let me have a whinge about 2 drivers on this afternoon's ride ...

Driver #1 decided to accelerate to overtake me on a narrow climb just as a couple of cars were coming down the hill towards us. He could have held back a couple of seconds and overtaken me when the road ahead was clear, but instead he took the alternative "What are you moaning about - I was only doing 30 mph in a 40 mph limit and I left 9 inches between my nearside and your right elbow!" option. :cursing:

Driver #2 also did a dodgy overtake. We had just come through some temporary traffic lights for roadworks so the traffic on the other side of the narrow road was backed up. I saw a parked vehicle ahead of me on my side of the road creating a pinch point. There was a car in front of me doing about 20 mph. I looked behind me and saw a car about 50 yards back so I got out of the saddle and sprinted to the speed of the car in front and pulled out to go past the parked vehicle. The moron in the car behind wasn't having that so he floored the throttle to try to get to the pinchpoint first. He failed! I was halfway past the parked car when he caught up with me but he forced his way past, then swerved left to avoid a large vehicle ahead on his right, and braked heavily to avoid colliding with the other car in front on our side. The fact that I had to brake to avoid running into the back of the overtaker shows that he had gained nothing other than scaring me and ending up in front of me, rather than spending 2 seconds behind.

So I want to publicly apologize to a biker on Ronald Reagan hwy this morning. My power steering on my car went out as I was trying to begin a turn and I may have startled you. I hope you're okay! I'm really truly very sorry and I'm planning on getting a new car so nothing like this happens again.

I have been running over this winter and find the local traffic far worse running than cycling. Nearly been run over twice.
Second time I was on the pavement, woman in a Golf came out of her drive which had a high hedge and she did not look at pavement just pulled out up to kerb almost into me. I just managed to stop at her front wheel. Instead of letting me by or even apologising she just pulled out, turned sharply in my direction and nearly took me out with the side of her car.

And the buggers don't dip their headlamps for a mere runner.

Love them or hate them, cars are a way of life and indispensable nowadays as there is no alternative. I wouldn't dream of not having one myself.

I don't have a care, never had one, hate driving  Like being driven, though
There are far too many out there! Where the feck are they all going? i ask myself frequently. Even what used to be quiet on the roads mid day rides
True this, I used to look forward to an early morning Sunday commute, the only time when I was confident to ride the whole way on road without getting squashed or abused, but now there is quite a bit of traffic.
I don't hate cars, after all cars and vans bring my deliveries, but a few hours a week without traffic would be lovely for me on the bike.

Cars are only a "way of life" because life has evolved to exploit the presence of the car - the car became a way of life simply because it was there, not because it is indispensible.

If the car were phased out, say, over the next 5 years life would very quickly adapt and the horse/bicycle/bus/walking would quickly become a way of life instead. Just because something is as it currently is does not it mean it could never change, never be replaced, never be dispensed with.

Our car-O-centric society exists because that society is by and large lazy in both deed and thought.
