Is your tyre pressure up around 100psi? Even with "bombproof" tyres you should still try and avoid piles of debris imo.

Tyre pressure has been around 140psi (pump says 145 but I always lose a bit taking off the hose). They are seriously big holes in the rubber of the tyre. Very disappointed considering the cost.

Well it looks like the Ultremos have lasted 200 miles and that's about it.... . They are great looking tyres and the grip is fantastic however they cut up really badly. No puncture but there is one hole in each tyre where I can see through to the underlying layer. Has anyone else had this? I'm not confident riding any kind of distance on them but if other people have experienced the cutting up and then got many more miles out of the tyre, let me know and I may keep them.

Considering going for gatorskins now instead....

Funnily enough, Clarion, I have a VAR, and they are undoubtedly useful, but the only time I tried to gently prise a tyre over a rim, it went all bendy on me...a bit like my legs

Keep the tyre pressure 'up' too Martin - every little helps.

I put on new fabric rim tape which really didn't help matters. It made even my old tyres a lot less easy to get on the rims. Yes, I took your advice about the tiny arrows, thanks. I will check the tyre pressures regularly.

M+ 25s Martin...you'll come around to it for a hard-core commuter...sooner or later.

8 bar is a good pressure. If you're running those tyres at 140 psi that is about 24psi more... Keep an eye on your wheel rims!

As a good compromise why not try some Durano's I have the + version but the normal ones look pretty good and light,meant to last ages before wearing out too.

Have tried 'gators and was not impressed tbh,slippy in the wet and p* twice in 1st 200 miles.

I'll wear armwarmers before I ride 25s...... and as I only have the one road bike there's no point having "best" tyres, not going down the route of changing tyres for a particular ride. Where would that lead? Next thing you know, I'll be spending Saturday's cleaning my bike....

I'm afraid that after my experience with the Ultremos I won't be buying Schwalbe for a while. I did really like them, on the vintage car run I thought they were fantastic over 100 miles but to cut up in the way they have has just disillusioned me to the brand.

I had some Conti 4000s a while back and although they could be a tad slippy on drain covers etc, they held everything else well so I think it's going to be Gators. If these prove to be as poor as the Ultremos for commuting I'll just go back to £10 tyres at least I don't lose anything that way.

Ok joking aside, the tread on them looks like it would slow me quite a bit. Not bothered by the extra weight but the Gators get quite good reviews too.

Plus as I said, my recent experience with Schwalbe has put me off a bit.

Yeah. Stick with it, though. First time I used it, I thought it was going to give up completely it was so bent. I was even cringing in case it snapped. But it did the job.

It's funny,I had Conti 4 seasons before the Durano and they were great for grip,decent for p* resistance (2 in 1,000+ miles) but they did cut up quite badly.
Durano+ are now number1 for me,though I'd have M+ if my bike could take them and guards.
