I think I've lost a ring, but I'm not 100 percent sure I have so I'll keep looking. Have you ever lost something of value and did you ever find it?

My Uncle gave me a WW1 leather flying helmet when I was a kid. I insisted on wearing it to junior school. Teacher confiscated it to be returned at end of day. It went missing and was never seen again. Gutted. It was probably worth a bit too.

Many many years ago - well before I was born - my Grandad on my mother's side won a winners medal in a Football competition
I think it was for a Police team

The medal was gold and shaped sort of like a Christmas Tree

anyway - at some point when she was adult he gave it to my Mum who put it on a gold chain and wore it as a necklace

Now - to my Mum and her sister their Dad was pretty much a God
he could do no wrong and criticism or his was not allowed
(their brother was older and, although he loved him and respected him, had a more realistic view!)

anyway - put those 2 together and this necklace was very valuable to the 2 girls beyond monetary value

then it got lost
this was before my Mum's demture was obvious and many years before she died

anyway - the house was searched many times - it was never found

then - when she died and my Dad died shortly after - I had to clear the house out
My aunt and some of my Mum's friends came round to help me sort out her clothes
and some of them took some of them for themselves - the rest went to a charity shop

I gave some other stuff to the people to thank them or because they were special to them for some reason

then I moved the bedside cabinet - it wasn;t big and had been moved often

and I heard something fall down and there was the medal/necklace

My aunt was overjoyed at it being found after so many years

BUT - the question is
that bedside cabinet was small and not heavy - and had been moved loads of time for cleaning etc

so why was it not found before???
there were no gaps in the back of the cabinet - so it hadn;t been inside in a weird place and worked its way out

very strange

this has also happened a lot to me
I loose something and search for it
then find it later and I KNOW I looked there before several time

almost makes you believe in some elves or fairies that mess with us!!

As a kid, I was walking under some trees at Fiskerton Lincs and bent down, picked up a piece of amber with a perfectly preserved insect inside. Pure luck/chance..its a once in a lifetime find really. You can guess the rest...disappeared, no idea where it went.

A gold Cross pen given as a 21st present and lost within months and never found.
Found an identical one 30 years later in a different city. Karma, I like to think.

My wife lost her wedding and engagement rings. We'd gone away on holiday and she put the rings in an old sock and put it in a secure place at home whilst we were abroad.

Came back, had a clear out...

Some time later realised the rings were in an old sock she had thrown away. Went through the insurance but hadn't realised how much gold had gone up so we we're a little underinsured.

So insurance settled, visited same jewelers as the original rings came from. MrsF chose white gold so they weren't the same.

Roll on some years (at least five) and MrsF inadvertently said she had found the rings recently tucked away somewhere safe.

Similar happened with my son. Lost a decent digital SLR and lens. Insurance again settled. Some time later we got a phone call from college. Erm we've a camera here that isn't one of ours and we think it's your sons ? It was.

Not being silly but...have you reported it to plod/asked about lost property? There are quite a lot of honest people out there. If I found a gold ring, I'd hand it in. You might get lucky. What have you got to lose?

An electronic key fob for the gates to a £2m house (not mine!). After searching everywhere for hours and not being 100% sure that I hadn't dropped it outside I owned up that i had lost it to the owner who got a security firm to change all the lock codes.

The months later I went to put on a pair of shoes that I hadn't worn for ages and my big toe located the missing fob deep inside.
