£1 per day even if you are only 1p overdrawn and it is an arranged overdraft!

They've pulled out of Hebden Bridge so the last remaining reason for using them has now gone. I'm going to switch to another bank ASAP. The only trouble is - which one - they are nearly all as bad as each other!

I hate the Halifax anyway.
Me too. Always spent a fortune cultivating the "we're almost a charity" image, behind which they had some of the most unethical practices in the industry. If it moves, sell it an endowment; if it doesn't, sell it a pension.

It was the Halifax's incompetent lending that brought down Bank of Scotland, then brought down LloydsTSB - previously the best-run and best-capitalised bank we had.

I went to a fancy dinner a couple of years ago where Lord Stevenson assured me and 300 other mugs that his Halifax was sounder than sound. Three weeks later it was bust. Not Lehman Bros, not the global crisis, just greed and incompetence catching up with them. Tossers.

Santander. A proper bank, run by people who don't play at being Masters of the Universe.

They are all as bad as each other. I work for one of them... but only for another few weeks.

You just need to figure out which one is not so bad that they make you want to boil your own head.
Also they're bad in different ways - so figure out which particular breed of greedy and selfish you can put up with the easiest.

Having said that - apart from incompetence when dealing with fraudulent use of my bank card - Nationwide have always been pretty good. And Lloyds TSB seem to be omnipresent, so very convenient.

Nationwide are pretty good and you can still telephone and speak with somebody at the branch.

Co-op? They advertise their ethical banking policies. No branches as such, but you can pay in etc at any post office.
I was with First Direct before I switched - they were always fine (HSBC, the parent company, much less so - had a bit of a run-around with them when my Dad died and I had to get the funds from his HSBC accounts!).
But then I do most of my stuff on the internet (but both the above were fine on the phone, with UK call centres) - neither of these are ideal if you are the sort who likes to have a local branch to go into.

Ha! I'm pretty sure when those self-gratification artists Halifax came up with their adverts, they weren't thinking "How can we spark consumer discussions on which of our rival banks they should move their accounts to?"

+ 1 for Coop or their online version Smile. Good service, ethical banking, and they've been helpful to us on a human level i.e. stamping bank statements for SWMBO's residency applications. Plus your money is safer as they don't mess about with collateralised debt obligations.

not quite sure how halifax fell for the advertising company's pitch that this advert would attract customers and not put them off ever setting foot inside the door. although i would set foot inside the door, just to lob a molotov cocktail inside.

Perhaps Nationwide? One of our remaining mutual building societies.

They sound good, but I'd like a branch in Hebden Bridge and we only have the Usual Suspects (now minus the Halifax; Yorkshire Bank left a few years back).

Ah, now that sounds like a good idea! I'll look into that.

I've got another banking question (about cashing US dollar cheques) but I'll start another thread about that.
