BM, just because I've made eye contact with someone doesn't mean I'll go but making eye contact makes sure the driver is aware of you & with HGVs having numerous blind spots this is a very important thing.

If you are going to go up the inside of a lorry then you need to concentrate properly. Don't allow yourself to be distracted by anyone shouting at you, no matter how 'silly' the vehicle they're pedalling is!!!

On my commute I have a busy junction with an ASL:

Going up the inside of HGVs is common practice here as it is a shortcut from the motorway to several large industrial estates.

Now I know the light sequence and if the traffic in small parallel road to the left is stationary then I have time to do so, but if the traffic is moving then taking the lane is more appropriate.

Local knowledge can be as important as riding skills.

The Cycle Chat Bromley Massive had a look at the very place the incident happened this morning. The road curves more to the left then the video actually shows. We agreed that the cyclist must have been a complete loon to have tried to go down the side there.

I hate that part of the gyration system. People change lanes without indicating and it's pretty tight under the bridge.

Indeed, and the cobbled pavement juts out to create a degree of deflection to slow speeds down in that lane - it's not straight ahead as you go under the bridge and the lanes are v narrow.

4 lanes become 5 narrow lanes under the bridge IIRC.

I avoid Vauxhall Cross as a general rule.

Aha! Stupid me, I knew I recognised that bridge somewhere, very familiar, just couldn't place it! Now I know where we are, we can have a link to the precise locality, so people can get a feel for the junction in context.

I've certainly passed that spot many times myself, admittedly more often in car than on bike, and I'd rate it one of the busiest and most awkward junctions in London, certainly not to be trifled with! But it is definitely negotiable by bike if you have a bit of commonsense.

I had a bloke overtake me today (he was on a decent bike / all the gear etc) I am unfit, in a suit on a cheapo hybrid.

He sailed past, right up to the next junction and undertook a bus and stopped level with about 3/4 of the way to the front of the bus.

At that point the one way system is weird, but the bus wasn't indicating and could have gone straight on or right (no actual immediate left turn) but still, crazy riding.

Unfortunately he was off and running by the time I arrived at the junction.

I always wait behind the busses there as 50% go straight on with a left turn with a blind pinch point about 100 yards down the road. I hate those moments - you feel you want to cover your eyes in case something goes horribly wrong
