I'm not sure the power steering would work either with the servos out of action.

Also most cars have servo assisted brakes. The servo doesn't work if the engine's not running.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has a magazine called Spectrum. Years ago, it had an article about how to build an EMP gun using the magnatron from a domestic microwave oven. It was quite simple.

My car needs a timing light - but it is 20 years old and has a distributor. None of that coil pack and crank sensor rubbish.

I think the bodywork would offer a fair degree of protection from The Death Ray. If I remember correctly, the IEEE version was capable of knocking out a transistor radio at ten feet, not exactly a military grade weapon.

A small booster charge launches it without setting fire to the operator - then a larger charge takes over to send it downrange. Ingenious.
