haha, I know, I am going to get the ferry from seville or somewhere down there, I have just quit my job this morning and went and bought a bike from Evans, been reading the forums and I think it's best I do it on my own, in terms of packing for a trip that long do I need to get extra chain sets, chains, tyres, inner tubes, you guys know where I can get a packing list?

A mate told me that it cost him a lot more to get from Spain to Tenerife than it did to just fly from Manchester, so I don't see the point of the ride!

If you wanted to cycle to the south of Spain - that sounds good.

It sounds like a big challenge for a new cyclist. When were you thinking of doing it, and how long were you planning to take? How far can you ride comfortably, and how fast? How are you carrying a load on your bike? Are hills a problem?

I like that attitude!

To be honest I wouldn't bother too much with spares if you're going through France and Spain as I'd imagine there are bike shops all over. Perhaps some tyre levers and patches and an allen key, but the chances of needing anything else riding a new bike through Europe are pretty remote so I'd not bother and accept that one day I might have to push the bike to the nearest bike shop, that might be a while away.

I admire your plan in the face of unemployment; but Tenerife? Could you not just cycle to Blackpool and stand in a sauna with a bottle of vodka? You may have guessed that my memories of Tenerife are not good; but then I was stuck in the cesspit of Las Americas for 2 weeks with company that I could have done without TBH ..

When are you going? I met a guy last night in Saltaire, Javier, he has cycled Edinburgh - Carlisle - Durham -York and is heading for Liverpool today before a zig-zag to London, from where he'll be cycling home to Malaga. I have his number?

He was my type of tourer, luckliy I spoke better Spanish than he spoke English so were able to get along. He was doing the tour on an ancient, too small, women's, bright yellow MTB that you would not give £20 for. Go for it, anybody can do big tours on anything.

I'd thought about it several years ago when we lived in Tenerife for a few years and there are many beautiful and fantastic places to see and visit once you get away from the main tourist resorts but the expensive ferry from Spain puts an end to most peoples idea. What would you do when you get to Tenerife? There are also two bits of water in the way.

Ferry from Pto de Santa Maria, from memory it was not cheap, and took forever! Go for it. I never knock anyone for riding a bike.

Parts of Tenerife are fabulous - Mt Teide - the geology is fascinating if you like that kinda thing (which I do, lots of a'a and pahoehoe). There's a tiny stretch of beach with green volcanic sand somewhere (at the other end of a nudist beach I think). Also there is good Spanish food there if you don't go to the chips-wiv-everyfink bit. For cyclists, I remember there is a tour company that takes you up the mountain and you freewheel down. Or you can cycle up first and be hench.

The lunar landscape is amazing, as is the volcano. There are some pretty bits amongst the Irish pubs.
