I've been riding on ice/snow for the last three days now - the first day I decided to take the mtb and that was OK; but now I'm back on the hybrid which is a bit more difficult to keep upright. I think my life is made easier by the lack of hills. I just ride slowly and everything is fine.

700x38 schwalbe snow studs - no stock anywhere right now though!!!
You can get 700x35 but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't fit the Ribble, and there would be no room for mudguards!

Left the road bike at home this morning.
Cycling in on the MTB, with full off-road knobblies. Good grief I'd forgotten how slow the "tank" is compared to the road bike.
Still faster than all the motorists though..... and I know I can get home tonight even if it snows constantly

You can get 700x35 but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't fit the Ribble, and there would be no room for mudguards!
On my ribble road bike I've got full mug guards and run 700x25 marathon + and I can just about get it set with no rubbing from the tyres and mud guards. If I put wider tyres I'd have to get rid of the guards, I'd rather use my mtb than getting sprayed with crap from the roads on my ribble with no guards.

Diesel and slush - yuck. Glad you got in ok
Diesel seems to be getting everywhere at the moment. Considering it costs more than £1.20/litre at the moment you'd think they'd be more careful with it! I think it's the warnings about keeping your tank full in winter just in case you get stuck that causes it as people overfill their tanks to make sure.
I brought the MTB out of retirement today, and on the way home had a great ride in a couple inches of soft snow on the off road cycle path - that was fun
Unfortunately it's all melting into puddles ready to freeze over tonight so tomorrow may be "interesting".

Used MTB today to get me too and from rail station, BAD idea. Even with knobblies on, snow too thick to be of any use, was ok on roads but to be honest, its a very risky situation, sharing the road with cars when the snow is that bad. So am walking till it clears.

No bike for me today, just not worth the risk. Lots of snow/slush/ice around, and no sign of a let up just yet.
Hope you guys who have escaped this so far, carry on being so lucky. We had some fantastic thunder and lightening during a blizzard last night, strong enough to shake the house!

I hope you got home OK. I hate downhills in the wet/ slush etc! I'm quite glad (
) its a study week, so I'll only be in once at uni this week. Whilst it should be OK going to uni, mostly up hill; coming home ! I might just take the bus that day and walk the half mile to the building.

Must admit the commute home had lost a lot of the fun element, very little snow in cambridge but a biting wind, and at one point I was on a cycle path that was slushy and was awful, so went back on the road.
I just think that going by bus is a wimp out, but then 17 miles each way is no joke, take it one day at a time I think

Having had no further snow during the day I decided to get on the bike for the way home, which is mostly up hill. A colleague said he heard there was snow on the way, and a quick glance at raintoday suggested that he was correct I left dodge early and set off home, in the hope of beating the snow.
The roads were certainly better, but not as good as I thought, despite a whole day of traffic. Light slush most of the way. However, I took it easy and also adjusted my route to avoid any winding downhills. No major problems, although not great fun.
I did see one other cyclist on the way home, but he had thick tyres.
The snow is falling again. Car for me tomorrow.

rode single speed racer in then swapped at lunchtime to the marin mtb , bit easier on the wet and getting icy roads , i always walk when snow laying its easier
