Ice bucket challenge

Personally I do not participate in Charity fund raising

I do not sponsor runs, bike rides, abseils or anything else for anybody

What I do is give money to a few select charities that I personally believe in, and give time to others.

That is what would be more value than any of these fads.

Spend an hour per week for a year working for a charity or organisation as this is the more difficult to obtain for many charities and hence more value than a slf promoting fad

There are many things one can do quietly and effectivley and if you dont want make a song and dance about it dont have to. On the other hand making a song and dance about a worthy cause brings great publicity to it, which is usually a good thing I think.

If you want a challenge, spend two hours a fortnight donating platelets, which will directly and immediately help cancer patients. Or spend a couple hours a month picking up litter in your area, that will directly help your community, it may even help diminish the spread of rats and thus disease in your manor, volunteer for the The Samaritans, perhaps you could help save a life, go help at Citizens Advice Bureau, and advise folk on every day challenges, become a scout / guide leader and help influence children in a positive way.

Hurrah!

Someone identifying the positive aspects of the current charity fundraising fad and identifying suitable activities for the mealy mouthed naysayers to do.

I have been nominated for the second time, same response, I won't do it, stupid childish craze. My wife said why don't you do it and just get it over with, to which I replied "if I do, I will nominate you", she wasn't impressed so I told her to be careful what you wish for. She hasn't mentioned it since lol

A disreputable video of the charitable activity. Not quite safe for work and I pity the teachers that are going to have to deal with the character in the video. I wonder how big the donation was from the family unit.

Some background information. Do the maths and make of it what you will....

Scarlett-Rose Davis became an internet sensation by letting rip after the drenching

This is the Midland youngster who became an internet sensation by letting rip with the F-word after taking the ice bucket challenge.

Scarlett-Rose Davis begged her grandparents to let her take part in the charity craze which has swept the world.

But the three-year-old's grandmother, Carla Davis-Ball, said she "could have died" when the pig-tailed tot blurted out "f***ing hell" after the drenching.

The 40-year-old, from Coalpool in Walsall, told the Mail: "I couldn't believe it when she came out with that language.

"She has picked up a few bad words when we have gone out for meals or into town.

"Children have brains like sponges and I can't stop it.

"But she does know it's wrong."

Carla recorded the footage on her phone last weekend in the garden of the house she shares with her partner Stuart Ball, Scarlett-Rose's grandad.

She proudly put it on Facebook while Stuart, 33, uploaded it to YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 40,000 times since Monday.

Mum-of-three Carla said Scarlett-Rose was dunked with warm water from a cooking pot after nominating a young friend called Marshall to take the challenge next.

"She had seen some of the ice bucket videos on my phone and seen one of my friends do it," Carla said.

"She said: 'Nanny, can I do that?'

"It makes me so happy that a three-year-old picked on a good cause and wanted to get involved.

"She knows it's for poorly people."

Scarlett-Rose has a baby brother called Shankley-Gary, aged ten months.

Carla and Stuart care for the children five nights a week and they spend two nights with their mum Demi, 19.

"The reaction to the video has blown my mind," Carla said.

"My phone is on charge constantly because of all the comments we have received."

Amazingly, Scarlett-Rose is not the youngest person to take the ice bucket challenge.

A video of a seven-month-old baby having a small plastic cup of water poured over its head was also posted on YouTube earlier this month.

The craze has raised £48 million in less than a month in aid of research into motor neurone disease.

The disease affects the brain and the spinal cord, causing motor neurones to degenerate and die, leading to gradual paralysis and eventually to death.

Midland rock star Robert Plant also posted a YouTube video showing him being drenched as part of the fundraising drive.

I was 'nominated' for this but have refused to join in.
Not because I'm a spoilsport or tight - I donate regularly to three charities of my choosing.
I also give my time to help others by leading family cycle rides for Scottish Canals, have set up a Belles on Bikes ladies cycling group and volunteer at the Helix

So far no one's mentioned my nomination again, luckily the people who nominated me aren't the, "well we're all doing it so if you don't there's something wrong with you," type.

They know better than to try that one.

So far I've escaped nomination and I hope it stays that way as I can't think of anyone I would nominate. I will be glad when this craze has ended though I'm sure it will be replaced by yet another. My youngest hasn't got a Facebook account, even though they are old enough and one of the reasons for not doing so is to avoid these stupid challenges which seems fair enough to me.

What, and you need a social networking site to dictate to you how to have fun? Heavens, if it's family fun you want just open a pack of cards and play games together.

Facebook doesn't own a monopoly on fun and it really ####s me off how easily people get reliant on it for their daily bread.
What on earth makes you assume I soley rely on FB for my fun...how in Gods name did you jump to that conclusion. Thats not a rant on my behalf...but a genuine question. You know NOTHING of my personal life, yet you quite happily pidgeon hole me based on one reference to something you clearly dislike.

Its only the internet...it doesnt matter, its notthat important in the scheme of things, no offence taken...more surprise
