People keep going on and on about it at work, showing endless 'hilarious' clips to anyone interested or not.

It's really tedious. Sorry, just my opinion. I can and do give to charity, I just don't feel the need to be drawn into this though.

I guess we all have differing levels of how much we're amused by something. I agree with you and have already told those that are still trying to show me clips...enough already, I've done my bit...time to move on, its only so funny.

It's like that no-makeup crap. I've not been nominated, and I won't be doing it if nominated. Some folk have gone to town and got drenched, but some have been pathetic that I've seen.

My motto (its not my motto really, but) if you want to do something that in your opinion gves you pleasure / has a purpose, do it and enjoy it for the light hearted fun it is.
If you disagree, thats fine. If you think its a waste of time....that's fine. If you dont want to do it...that's fine
But, getting angry about/upset about/decrying/questioning something that is at the end of the day a light hearted bit of fun thqt engages people..is a bit OTT isnt it ?
Its a free country isnt it ? Relax.
£3???
There are over 300 people my department and this combined with friends and relatives means that I am asked for between 3 and 6 charity a week

Let's call that £ 15 per week, £60 per month, and £720 per year

Nope... I will give to the Charities that I value and believe in
You suggested that you would have to chose which of your current charities would have to lose out if you did the £3 ice bucket challenge.

That's tight.
Not the case at all..... The original post is unequivocal.

At the moment we have at work two sponsored walks, a sponsored bike ride, two of these for McMillan, a football competition and a LEJOG ride

My position is clear, I do not give to random causes, I have a selected few to which I give the time and money I can afford.

What is unacceptable with these fads is the "bullying nature" and pressure to comply, with a failure to accept a simple "NO"

Your badgering to make this one an exception is a classic illustration.

Rather than the "its only £3", please explain why I should make an exception for yours and not these others?

The answer remains the same .... I am not in the slightest bit interested and reserve the right to stick with my charities

... or of course suggest in turn that you come and spend a couple of evenings and a few weekends with one of mine?

After all it is only a few days?

There is no 'bullying'. How can an online nomination be construed as bullying? I've been following the nominations of folk that I know within the Facebook. There might be nominations from several people who themselves had taken up the challenge and 'passed it on' but there's not been any follow through badgering despite several of my friends ignoring the challenge.

Are you creating imaginary scenarios in the online community based on the badgering that you receive at work? I admit I'd be grumpy if I was on the receiving end of so many solicitations for my cash. Come to think of it I get more approaches for donations on my doorstep from 'chuggers' than I do at work. I've had two charity canvassers in the past week both of them seeking donations of the 'standing order' kind'.

FWIW I see the ice bucket challenge as a bit of fun. I was nominated by a colleague's daughter. I surprised her by doing it - she thought that I was 'too sensible'. Clearly she doesn't know me that well. I distributed my 'challenges' influenced by my sense of mischief. I couldn't give a hoot about them being taken up. I've had my bit of fun.

The challenge appeals and repels on many different levels and there isn't really any need for in depth justifications for doing it or refusing to do it.

There is bullying. my girlfriend got nominated by her brother. They haven't been getting along too well recently and this was this first time he'd been interested in contacting her in about a month.
Following the nomination he then commented on something she'd put on Facebook saying shouldn't she be doing the challenge, tweeted us both about it and whatsapp'd her putting pressure on.

I completely agree with cunobelin. With constant, numerous requests to donate/sponsor something, you have to decide which to do and which not to do. And made to feel guilty about those you do not give to. Which has the negative effect on me of wanting to donate less overall. I really dislike the chugging mentality.

Apparently now the ALS Association wants to trademark it! http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...ademark-ice-bucket-challenge-viral-sensation/ Which I think officially means it's jumped the shark and is now time to stop it.

Dear me, youre a boring lot.. its given a lot of people a bit of a giggle, raised awareness and money for a charity, and given those who love to moan and complain as a hobby something new to obsess over. Lighten up. And just for the record, id not blimmin well do anything so daft, would i @NormanD @skudupnorth @smokeysmoo ...??
Bugger,i thought I could escape from you on here :cold::rain:
I'm not badgering anyone. You're the one who's running it along.

If you choose to not give £3 that's entirely your choice. But let's not pretend that it's because your chosen charities would suffer if you did.

And let's not make this a chariteering competition. You don't know how much I do, and I'm not going to tell you.
The point that you are still missing is that it is not £2, but multiples of £3

TO donete the £700 rrequired to support every one ofthese I am approached by or asked for would mena i could not aford my present donations
