The deal is that if you are challenged, you have to give money or pour ice water over your head. So, yes the vids are avoiding donating money.

Waste water? Did you miss the day at school where they explained how rain works?

Whilst we're lucky to have a plentiful supply of water in this country for the most part, you are aware that other countries/areas struggle to supply water to meet demand, right?

Take the current California drought for example. Especially areas which rely on the snow-pack up in the mountains as their water supply during the hotter months. A particulaly mild winter can result in less snow-melt runoff.

Meanwhile thousands, if not millions, of people in affected areas are pouring buckets of water over their head.

It is just a bit of fun but when children in poor countries are dying of diseases spread by infected water because they don't have access to clean water it does seem a bit wrong to post pictures of people pouring water over their heads, it smacks of 'we have so much water we can just waste it by pouring it over our heads, how cool is that' yeah I bet those kids drinking infected water are really impressed

the ice bucket challenge was started to raise money and awareness to the motor neuron charity. the idea was to take the challenge AND make a donation if you refuse the challenge you pay double so either way the charity was helped . let people have their fun chill out iced water helps

I've just spent a minute googling. Every reference I found says "bucket or donate", including wikipedia. Any sources to back up this version?

I've seen people do the "challenge" both ways, both donating and not donating, all whilst taking a bucket of water over their head. I'd guess it strongly depends on the person doing the challenge. Who'd have thought..

I can point you in the direction of a lot of people who also misunderstand.

The fact that I got the picture from Facebook and have seen it posted multiple times would suggest it's a very popular misconception. Not to mention the "bucket or donate" slogan.

That's nothing like the original challenge. Ok, it's morphed in the UK, but you can't criticise other people for taking their understanding from the original challenge - ice bath or $100.

Is it not a waste? Could it be put to a better use?

1. Almost all water poured onto the ground will evaporate and later return as rain, and thus not be wasted at all.
2. A few thousand buckets of water to generate an extra $77.2 million and counting seems a pretty good deal.
