They do indeed escape, or refuse to come out of a rabbit warren. I once found a ferret while walking my dogs in the woods. It was freezing cold (February) and the poor thing died, despite me carrying it gently home curled up in my woolly hat .

Was it the shape of the ferret/polecat?

The reason I ask is because weasels and stoats are much slimmer animals. When I see a weasel it looks like a very long sausage on legs. Regarding coloration, you can get melanistic (excessive dark pigmentation) in weasels and stoats.

If it was built like a ferret then it was probably a ferret. However, if it was altogether slimmer then I'd be thinking a melanistic weasel
