Mustelids, being long and thin, have a lot of surface area for their size which makes them a bit vulnerable to cold

Unlike the brontosaurus then, which only has to cope with being thin at the ends.

I'd guess its body was about 30cm long, shortish tail and it had, I think, a jet black coat and its breast looked like a pure white shirt front. lt stood on its hind legs ...

Because pine martens aren't common in the north west of England?

The white doesn't go all the way around the back on a PM. But if you are saying it's not as extensive as the pic indicates then maybe not a PM.
