It seems every day I get cut up or someone does something daft while I'm on the bike, but today's moron took the biscuit:
I was heading up Bootham, with stationary traffic in the oncoming lane. The light had just gone green for them but at the junction the traffic was still bumper to bumper. I was in pricondary (riding outside the white lines side of the cycle lane, so halfway between primary and secondary) just passing the Garden of Eden at 20mph and a lovely man in a silver BMW convertible pulled out of Marygate (the street on the left).

He got airzounded, I *just* managed to get behind him (though ended up clipping the pavement) and went around him, then a voice came from behind:
"What's your fkn problem mate?".
I never responded because I was still in work uniform and my response would have been a little explicit to say the least.

I know there's nothing anyone on here can do about it, I just fancied a moan, that's all

York scares me. If ever a town was crying out for cycle friendly policies that's it.

The thing is that York is *supposed* to be a cycling friendly city... At least Barclays haven't offered a Cycle Supherhighway scheme here yet... (although York's idea of a superhighway is pictured here)

I was in York with the family on Friday (P&R in the car). Wasn't too impressed with a roundabout with a cycle lane painted all the way around the periphery on the road. It's obviously not just the traffic engineers here that think its a good idea.

I'm not surprised you were confused, the roundabout you've mentioned is in Hull not York.

I go round that to work each day and always make sure I'm in the right lane, if the traffics particularly heavy with idiots or I have the kids with me I'll get off & use the crossings to get round.

Heh. Sorry, just the one in York reminded me of the cycling 'feature' of the Hull one. I was on a park and ride bus when I spotted the York one so not actually sure where it was (silver line bus to Monks cross if it helps though).

A cycle friendly York, and a high cycle use place - Hull. And both seem to think those lanes are a good idea

I know exactly where it is, the roundabout between Malton Road, Stockton Lane and Heworth Road. The only time I actually use the cycle lane around there is when taking the first turning, other than that it's primary all the way around.

Though I can trump your 5-lanes Piemaster  There is now a cycle lane the entire circumference of that roundabout (I'll get a picture tomorrow). How do you like my SEVEN left-hook oppurtunities?

I think the roundabout you mean is the one mentioned by 'Comedy pilot'.

About the only thing York & Hull have in common is cycling, there is no comparison over anything else. Hull is a unique place, glad I only go in to work.

Annular cycle lanes on roundabouts are just stupid. I wrote a blog article about one here.

The Cycling England Design Portfolio says:
Research suggests that annular cycle lanes in themselves offer no safety benefit
to cyclists. In fact, unless accompanied by a safe roundabout design they may
introduce extra hazards. Some cyclists may feel safer using cycle lanes, but these
feelings may be unfounded if the lanes put them in an unsafe position.

Annular cycle lanes have been introduced onto a number of UK roundabouts.
Some of these have been very poorly designed, having narrow lanes very close to
the perimeter. This is the worst possible position for cyclists to take up if they do
not want to leave at the next exit.

Sadly, Cycling England is no more.
