Zebra crossings should've been phased out years ago because they give a false sense of security. Some approach them thinking that a faint flashing yellow ball and some usually worn down white stripes will automatically stop approaching vehicles.

I do agree with you, however the driver could see me stopping so I assume that was a clue to him.

True but maybe he thought you were turning right across the crossing , he is not going to stop till he sees the Ped Imo.

The law is a bit vague on zebras. I think that unless somebody is actually on the crossing, you are not legally required to stop. It's bad manners not to of course.

Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing
  • look out for pedestrians waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • you MUST give way when a pedestrian has moved onto a crossing
  • allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
  • do not wave or use your horn to invite pedestrians across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.
A zebra crossing with a central island is two separate crossings (see pictures in Crossings (18 to 30).

Thank you, that has cleared things up a bit for me. I understand that you have posted the law and no your own opinion. so, In the video, lets say the lady crossing stepped out on to the crossing because she saw me stop ( I gave no signal to anyone) and she was hit by the porsche and killed. who is at fault?

I'm not a lawyer. If the lady stepped out in front of the car on the crossing, and the car had no chance to avoid hitting her at that moment, I think the driver would get off Scot-free. I would be interested to hear other peoples' opinion.

Edit: I stop at zebras and see motorists powering through in the opposite direction several times a month. It's far from ideal, but now I just roll my eyes and proceed. Sometimes the pedestrian thanks me. I don't expect that but it's pleasant when it happens.

As I read it the Porsche driver was slowing down gently waiting for the pedestrian to cross. As the pedestrian showed no signs of crossing they decided to go. It's only just before they start to accelerate that they got to the point of no return for stopping. In terms off etiquette not the best but showing awareness & they were driving in a totally legal manner.

Yes that's right. Rude not to stop but not a legal requirement.
EDIT: dunno what's up with my android lately but it does weird stuff when posting on this forum).

Posting as a driver who deals with several crossings every day on my commute I probably wouldn't have stopped either because she was dithering and hanging back and didn't look sure that she wanted to cross.

Good grief! You wouldn't want to live here. Practically no-one ever stops at a zebra crossing. Annoys the hell out of me. Just imagine you moved to France. Your Youtube channel would spectacularly burst with the pressure of videos like this. Bit of a none event really, isn't it? And have you asked the ped if they mind being uploaded onto the Internet?

It's a tough one isn't it? As a pedestrian I wait at a zebra until someone stops. Then I walk onto the crossing. But I've got to get across the other side so while I'm on the crossing I have to hope that any vehicle coming the other way will also stop. It can be a bit nervy and I sometimes end up sort of standing in the middle of the road waiting for a "second" give way as it were.

As a car driver I stop for pedestrians waiting at zebras. But I have gone through them while they have been waiting just because I didn't see them or they looked like they had stopped for a chat by the crossing or whatever.

I think the general principle (regardless of what the law may say) is, as a pedestrian, keep your wits about you while crossing and don't attempt to cross when there's traffic around until someone has stopped to give way to you.
