If only my employer had somewhere safe to put my bike..........

I hardly think a place where people might be eating is the right place for farting.

I did a stint in the dormitory of a London Edinburgh London control.

Goodness knows what those long distance fellas eat, but I've never heard so much, er, percussion.

Yes one gentleman woke me up he was so loud at the control in Edinburgh. I was dressed, breakfasted and out the door before I realised I'd only had 2 hours sleep!!

@Cyclopathic London Edinburgh London (or LEL) is a ride once every 4 years between the two capitals. There are controls along the way where riders check in (and also eat, sleep etc). There are many volunteers who staff these to which the riders are eternally grateful!

Here for rides.
My employer's about to shut 26 bike spaces without replacing them. Charmin.
On the face of it your employer would appear to be, what we call, a nobber. However if only 2.6 of the spaces are in regular use they may have a case....

We are about to move offices and will be providing more cycling spaces than we have at present. Partly because we (ok.... me) are declaring a no more non-folding bikes inside the office rule.

Unfortunately some of the cyclisti, especially those that I have led to the sunlight uplands of cycling enlightenment, have gone all diva-esque (on me) and are almost to the point of asserting the space their bikes go into needs to be centrally heated, rearing up on their hind legs and declaiming "Outside? I can't leave my carbon framed loveliness outside! Don't be ridiculous."

"It's a mode of transport not a fetish object" as a reply doesn't seem to be cutting it. I may have to ask the ringleaders to step into my office.

My bike is in the warmth.... well as warm as my (manager not owner) shop is.... in the cupboard under the stairs I did have to remove some unimportant stock:whistle: for it to fit though.... and is 1 metre away from where I am standing right now^_^

my employer never supplied 26 cycle spaces in the first place. OP do you have access to a secure backyard area if its a full size supermarket rather than a streetside metro mini one. If so could you lock your bike up to the fence inside it, a bit more out of sight and not readily accessible to the local populace?

No, they're all in use. In fact, sometimes I get to work and there aren't any vacant spaces, but luckily for me my OH (who works in the same place) starts earlier than everyone else and always gets a space, so I lock my bike to his!

Is taking your bike into the building and leaning it up against a wall beside your desk not an option ... granted you'd need a friendly / understanding boss for this to happen though. Mine was okay with this, but the only stipulation was that I carried it through the office and if wet put some towels / newspaper under the tyres to stop it staining the carpet flooring.

Yes there is a secure back area where the delivery vans are parked, I was thinking that was one possibility. Still waiting to speak to someone from HR but no one is ever around when I want to speak to them!

You just need a big lock and something to secure it to, without hissing off the safety elf ! If bothered about it being out in the weather, get a cover. I did this for a few years !

Could you just try it for a week or two first, find a quiet corner out of the way of the vehicles coming and going and prove the concept before drawing attention to yourself.
The cynic in me thinks HR will probably come up with a dozen reasons why you can't if they're like mine. My bike is stashed under a concrete staircase in a dead end cubby hole beside the rear door. It is an area used by all and sundry to dump broken furniture, computer gear, empty boxes & other rubbish until it goes into the skip.

HR objected to my bike going there as it was a fire risk and would impede disabled exit in a fire. Both utter bullpoop but it took 6 weeks of argument and photographs of cardboard and paper on every fire exit route and stairwell, proof that if they had got.to my bike, they would need a pneumatic drill to dig a new exit up from the basement to the higher level frontage rather than bypassing it and going out of the back door 10 feet away AND physically making them come and look to see the disabled exit signage and evac chair was at a completely different staircase even if they did fancy a dig. This isn't the only pointless and ridiculous fight I've had to have with them over cycling. The default position of HR v Cycles seems to be no, however stupid and knee jerk their initial decision is.
