I don't think anyone makes an off the shelf bike I'd actually like. Half the fun for me is in the modifying.

If I could only have one I'd get a lightweight steel frame made with relaxed angles and build it in 3 speed roadster trim.

My beloved Ron Spencer Custom Road Bike some thief stole in the 1980's, I'd cycled some huge rides on that bike, so many memories.
531 Reynolds frame and mostly Shimano 600 components. I've got a similar steel bike now, but it's not the same.

If I lived somewhere flat, the Pashley Guvnor would do me - seen them in the shop in Stratford, beautiful. Maybe a mod involving the rear derailler/hub from my Brompton P6R?

I've just finished the book "It's all about the bike", not a bad read. If you want the basic plot, a man decides to build a custom bike to do him the rest of his life and travels the world picking up the components for it. There's obviously a lot more to it than that........

If you decided to buy one bike, what would it be?

Rules (remember it's only a bit of fun  )

Must be off the shelf and available for anyone to buy
Budget - £1 - £5000

Feel free to leave your selection with pics or a link and the reasons why you've chosen it
Recently read this book..would recommend it, especially for roadies.
Here's mine:-

I'm getting old. I'm seriously considering simplifying my cycling life by selling all my bikes and investing in a single old fashioned Pashley roadster of some sort. Genuinely, seriously.

@Drago I Can just see you in your plus 4 flat cap etc etc pootling along on a Pashley

On a more serious note feel free to come over and take my 50's roadster for a spin and see what a true GENTS bike rides like

As @GuyBoden said, I love my 1985 Trek 600 with 531(anniversary) tubing and Shimano 600 throughout. Not a custom bike like his, but a great rider, and well suited to my build and stance on the cycle. Classic sport/tourer, interesting cast lugs.
Still with all the 80's accessories, except I removed the white saddle and fitted a leather saddle.

Off the shelf and within that price range (which I think is a generous range btw), I reckon I'd go for the Spa Cycles Elite Ti Tourer - comes with dynamo lighting as standard

Here's a picture - I would prefer bar-end shifters:

As it is, I have two bikes - a Jamis Aurora that has had some changes made to it - Racktime Addit pannier rack, SKS Longboard mudguards, dynamo hub and lights, Click-R pedals (I went for those because they are double sided and have reflectors built in) and I replaced the saddle with an old one that I prefer. Soon to be upgraded with Modolo Gran Fondo handlebars. My other bike is a Tern C7 folder.

Very nice.

I did allow a generous range and a highish top end because I guess for someone approaching a special birthday or life event, that amount of money for a "dream" bike isn't terribly outlandish. I mean, i took my wife to Florida for her 40th, hot air balloon ride, Disney, the works. Only when I got back and realised how much I'd spent I thought, that would have got me a hell of a bike!!! My 40th is fast approaching so who knows, Canyon Aeroad Disc??

I watched a documentary on youtube with the same plot. I'm not sure on the rules regarding posting links but the youtube link to it is below. It's called Ride of My Life and follows a bloke called Rob Penn around the world as he builds his bike, I think it's the same guy.

As for the actual question, I'm not sure as I don't think I have enough knowledge to make a decision. Something shiny?
