.... And you email the owner telling them to come and collect it, how long before it belongs to you if they don't come and get it?

A month if you hand it in to the Police.

30 days, however the owner can still lay claim to it. Even if you hand it into the police in the first place.

I handed something in earlier this year and when I collected it a month or so later I made it clear I was going to sell the item as I had no use for it and asked how I stood legally and they said "No problem don't blame you." and they explained that what you said is indeed correct but the original owner would have to take me to small claims court to get the item back or its monetary value off me.... Got £40 quid which went in my bike fund (which has now been spent)

P.S. If anyone on here tries claiming the item I found was theirs I want to know what it was and an exact location as to where it was lost and if you provide both.... we'll go to court and let the beaks sort it out:tongue:

I once found a diamond ring and became the owner of it after a month - I took it to the jewellers and he pointed out the missing stone and said: "that was thrown away. Nobody will ever claim it"! Weirdly, the police in Eastbourne where I found it actually posted it to me in Leeds (where I had gone to work). It was about 20 years ago, not sure they'd do it now.

I think if it's a dog you've found, Sara_H, it's only a week until you can claim it - but via the police. It's not a dog though, is it?

Just to counter that...
I had a bike stolen. Reported it, heard nothing, moved on.
A few years later I found the bike in town.
The rider had bought it off a rellie, who had found it and reported it to the police. The same police station I'd reported the theft to. The Bill took possession, and one strongly worded solicitors letter later, my bike was mine again. Without court action or any money changing hands.

If an item is reported to the police as a stolen item I believe, as you have stated then you would have a lot better chance of recovery..... I think genuinely lost (not stolen then found) items once the month is out can be sold without much cause for concern

Bob Dylan left his guitar on a plane many years ago. The people who found it asked the record company what to do, they never had a reply. That guitar just sold at auction for $ H U G E
