Just to counter that...
I had a bike stolen. Reported it, heard nothing, moved on.
A few years later I found the bike in town.
The rider had bought it off a rellie, who had found it and reported it to the police. The same police station I'd reported the theft to. The Bill took possession, and one strongly worded solicitors letter later, my bike was mine again. Without court action or any money changing hands.

I found a carbon road bike dumped off a bridge into a river in 2009. Took it to the Police where a clerk laboriously filled in a report by hand in a big ledger then handed me a torn-off slip as a receipt. I realised that there was zero chance of that report being linked with any report of a theft held on any computer and sure enough, a month later, the Police gave the bike back to me.

Oops, sorry to those who wanted to know what it was, I had a very busy social calander yesterday so unable to respond.

When I say I found it, it found me on windy day, it blew in to my car as I was driving. It's massive, so I put it in car to prevent it causing any further damage or injury.

Well, that's a relief! Now all of us reading this thread who were pondering various unmentionable scenarios, can... well, just not mention them . Some things are best left unsaid.

I found an e-trek GPS device on the floor in a car park and took it in to the local police station. They told me they'd file it but had no room (it is as big as a packet of fags...how much room do they need?) so I should take it home and if no-one claimed it in 30 days, it was mine! So it's now mine.

Another slightly more disturbing thing occurred when we found a greyhound cowering under a motorway bridge on a Sunday morning, obviously thrown out by its owners for not winning the night before, and we took him to the same police station as the one above. They told us their kennels were full and that we should take the dog home with us! We jokingly asked if it would be ours in 30 days if no-one collected it and were told yes, he would be ours! We took him to another police station and they were only too keen to house the poor, cowering, but tall, dog.
