My youngest found a mobile in the park, which we persuaded her had to be handed in, but if it wasn't claimed, she'd get it. She was thrilled: it was much better than the cheapo we'd bought her. At the end of the required period, I went back. The guy on duty muttered something about he didn't have the training and I'd have to come back. When I came back, the guy said it was locked in the storeroom and he couldn't go right now because they were understaffed today, and I'd have to come back. When I came back they said that I couldn't have it. Data protection. And that was that. When I asked why I hadn't been told this when I handed it in, instead of on my fourth visit, they shrugged their shoulders.I found a carbon road bike dumped off a bridge into a river in 2009. Took it to the Police where a clerk laboriously filled in a report by hand in a big ledger then handed me a torn-off slip as a receipt. I realised that there was zero chance of that report being linked with any report of a theft held on any computer and sure enough, a month later, the Police gave the bike back to me.
