Go on, don't let me stop you.

Or is it not a ladylike reply?
I'd hate you to think any less of me.....

Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember Esso Blue ads - I wonder what triggered both of us to post?
How odd. As soon as I started reading the thread, the Esso Blue song jumped into my head. I had forgotten about Smoke gets in your eyes. My Dad seemed to like the old ads for some reason. Just as we all do here. Nice healthy dose of nostalgia

Well, you say healthy, but have you noticed it's nearly all sweets, fizzy drinks and alcohol? :mrpig:

With reference to the thread title, you don't though do you? There is hardly any chocolate on a Club now-a-days. I remember nibbling all the chocolate off then eating the biscuit, now I usually have one or two Clubs when Im at the Platelet donor clinic, they are hardly worth the bother of unwrapping to eat.

Bring back Green Shield Stamps, they were much more fun than a Nectar card, at least with GSS you could while away an evening sticking the stamps in a book, then browse the Green Shield stamp catalogue, to see how many books of stamps you needed to get a stainless steel tea service or a Ford Escort.

I had a Sheriff's badge, cowboy hat and cap rifle from the Green Shield Stamps book. That year we all 3 kids had our Christmas presents from there because there was no spare money! My elder sister had a football and my twin had a Tressy Doll.

I'm sure my mum got me stuff from there too, but I don't remember. I do remember going to the nearest GSS showroom, ( A bit like ARGOS is today ) in Kingston to get a stoneware mixing bowl and the tea service though.

Didn't Argos start as an offshoot or development of Green Shield Stamps?

You could right, I think they did.

EDIT

History
The company was founded by Richard Tompkins who had previously established Green Shield Stamps in the United Kingdom. Whilst on holiday in the Greek city of Argos, he came up with the idea that people could purchase goods from his "Green Shield Gift House" with cash rather than savings stamps. He rebranded the original Green Shield Stamps catalogue shops as Argos beginning in July 1973,[8] the first purpose-built store opening on the A28 Sturry Road,Canterbury in late 1973. Green Shield House was in Station Road, Edgware.

Curiously, for me anyway, I was born down the Sturry Road.

I feel more educated! I love finding out this sort of background fact.
