Good on the checkout lady.

Mobile phones are getting to be a bane (mine is very, very rarely used).
This is up there with people who use their mobile in the cinema, the light from the phone screen is very, very irritating when you are trying to watch a film.

I have to admit that we do our groceries online... But when I do venture out to a shop, I frequently see people on the 'phone at the check-out.

I think the check-out woman did the right thing. Hurrah for her! This obsession with 'being elsewhere' during social interaction is horrid and lazy and ill-mannered.

Even odder is that the malefactor was so immune to the crassness of her own behaviour that she stirred up a media kerfuffle about it. I'd be embarrassed to have been found out as so utterly lacking in politeness and modern etiquette.

We (fascists that we are) ban 'phones from the table at meal time. Mobile 'phones are wonderful things, but...

I'd have told the checkout assistant to 'Get Fu&ked!', continued my conversation and if she wasn't happy to serve me without my undivided attention, she'd have had to wait, along with all those in the queue behind until she happy to serve one of the many people who pay her fecking wages!

Manners cost nothing and in this case yours would be clearly lacking, as was this "customers"...
Just because you believe you pay her wages does not mean you have the right to be rude to someone and ignore them in favour of talking on the phone...

That is what is Broken about Britain, the belief you are better than someone else or that you can just blank people because they are "only" supermarket check out staff and your inane phone call or conversation is more important...

Everyone deserves a pleasent smile, a "good morning" or "hello", be they a street cleaner or your boss (note street cleaner before boss ).

I have worked the tills in the past, and for several years... I'd have never, not ever had the gall to 'demand' a paying customer give me their undivided attention otherwise i refuse to serve them.

What next, "Will you stop talking to your children/the person behind you, otherwise i wont serve you"

Despair away, it is all the niggly things that come together in the end to make one big problem.
Small erosions over time can create a bigger unexpected problem later on, unless you deal with the small things as well as keeping an eye on the bigger picture.

There are many times where I have effectively walked into a shop on auto-pilot, bought something, handed over some money, collected my change and walked out again. I see others do the same thing every day.

Is it really any different to being on the phone?

I think I must be rural-fied or something a trip to the shops usually means a conversation with the cashier and at a minimum Hello, Thank you & goodbye. I even make the small people say hello & thank you & goodbye.
