You would have had my respect if you had challenged him, rather than walking away with your tail between your legs, stampless.
Yes that's what I should have done.
It was a mobile, and it was a personal call. I obviously don't know precisely what he was saying but a jokey call with a mate sounds different in tone even if you can't hear all the words, besides he was chuckling.

Anyway. I'm done with it and bugger him to all corners of hell.

|GRRRRRRRrrr! :cursing:

The encounter, if you can call it that, lasted maybe 5 seconds 6 at most.
I went to a Post Office to buy a book of stamps. No one around as I approached the window. Guy leaning on his side of the desk, phone to his ear, he sees me approach. Looks down to the counter.
I put my hands on the counter expecting him to look up and ask what I want, or at least acknowledge me.
He carries on staring at the counter STILL on his f******* phone.

I count to 10, stop at three because I have already lost my rag. In serious danger of committing some kind of illegal act I turn on my heels and walk away swearing out loudly in a profuse and filthy manner. (to myself in fact as no one else is there)
What a thick skinned, slack jawed, slobbish, uncouth, self centered, toss-pot.

AND, his glasses didn't suit him and what WAS he thinking wearing that jumper??

You should have taken YOUR phone out and took his picture (pretended to if it doesn't have a camera) and ask in as loud a voice as possible how his employers will think of him when you send the picture to them. Tends to work a treat, that one.

Oh give it a rest with the I pay your wage schtik. It's an unearned presumption of superiority that denies respect or rights to the other party, it ranks with I'm not racist but.....

Rubbish. Racism is an assumption of superiority - "I'm better than you because I'm white", eg. There's no assumption of superiority here, just the assumption that if you agree to accept pay to do a job, you should bloody well do the job. The only person denying respect to another human being here is the person ignoring another who has every right to expect their attention.

Was it a crown office or a sub? Cos if it wasn't a crown chances are he is his own boss i.e. The Postmaster who owns that post office

yeah right, self righteous indignation for all of 6 seconds delay.

There's very very few of us that don't pay most other peoples wages nor are paid by the same people ourselves in this interrelated consumer society. Its a stupid comment to make generally and particularly in relation to such an utterly trivial infraction.

Of course we all pay each others' wages. That's one of the reasons we should all treat each of us with courtesy when we interact. And if we can't manage that, we ought to stay the hell away from customer-facing jobs.

You can call it 'utterly trivial' all you like...if I was completely ignored by someone who should be engaging with me for - yes, even for five or six seconds - it would piss me off no end. I wouldn't do it to someone else; I would not expect to have it done to me. If it's ok with you, fine. I'd suggest it wouldn't be ok with the vast majority of people. Why? Because it's rude. Just that. And rude people have no business taking other people's money to do jobs that require you to be polite.

I'm with you with everything except the timespan. If I approach a counter and the person is on the phone, I do expect them to acknoledge my presence, either eye contact, verbal, or sign language. However six seconds is not long enough, no responce after 30 seconds and they are rude, after just six (and I am sorry to type this) but you come across as rude.

It doesn't take six seconds to be rude. I once had somebody click their fingers at me and say "YOU - tell me where ..." and I was right peed off before he even got halfway through the sentence, about two seconds or so! :cursing:

I don't mind somebody quickly finishing a call before dealing with me, but I would expect a look of recognition or some form of acknowledgement, and I would expect them to wrap up the call ASAP.

Ha ha. I work in hospital, when I'm walking between departments people often address me without even looking at me and say " where's this?" and shove an outpatients appointment card at me. No excuse me, no please and more often than not, no thank you. How rude!
