I keep getting PRs; 5 more today. 20 miles, 1320ft, 16mph average, max 42.9mph. If I didn't get thigh cramps after 30 miles I'd be unstoppable!

Just do rides in blocks of 20 miles each, then you won’t get the cramps at 30 miles.

If you practice intervals, this will increase your pace gradually over a long period of time. It sounds like your body is use to this distance and speed and its just a case of building stamina and pace for the long haul.

Hydration !!!

Assuming that your cramps are not due to lack of food and drink, take a look at your position on the bike. @Oldfentiger was having awful cramps until he had a proper bike fit done which sorted him out.

I thought I'd cracked it by dropping my seat 10mm, but tbh I think it is down to hydration.

I usually take two 700ml bottles for a longer (for me- 30 miles plus) ride but it's still not enough.

If your mileage ticker is right I would guess at conditionning and pushing too hard chasing PB's.

It's the same for all of us.

If we start out fast we'll blow up early.

We can probably all say "I can go at speed X, which is fast for me, but only for distance Y".

Actual values of X and Y vary from person to person obviously.

Take those 20 miles a bit easier and you'll be able to last longer.

That's it, you see. I always feel guilty if I'm not going flat out. I struggle to find the time to get out any more than twice a week, so I have to make every mile count. It actually helps that it's hilly where I live.

I'm rubbish at pacing myself and get bored easily if I'm not hammering it.
