I'm glad I cycled in today.
The main roads were clear, just a bit slushy in places and I hadn't noticed any ice. Hopefully the way home will be just as uneventful as it'll be harder to see any ice in the dark! I'm banking on the main roads being clear though, and I'll just take extra care on the side roads. It took me an extra 5 minutes to get into work though (usually it's just over 13 mins, today it was just over 18 minutes). You forget how much extra work it is on a MTB with 2.1" knobblies and low gearing.

Works car park (which is on a slope) however hadn't been gritted and you couldn't really see the parking bays. Reception have just tanoyed the reg numbers of several cars (about 6 in all). Apparently they had started slipping down the car park. Facilities think that perhaps there was ice under the snow where they parked. Ooops.

The cycle lane from Westhill to Kingswells near Aberdeen looked like ice covered by fresh snow today. Through the snow were at least 3 bike tracks .

Respect

P.S. I drove in today.

Not too bad but apart from the rljing from cyclists another (new) trend is me being undertaken by other cyclists which happened twice today and with which im not happy about.

Get used to it. Very often I'll slow down in traffic for, say, a zebra crossing or because I'm catching up with the vehicle in front, and a bike will zip past kerbside. On occasion they'll then pull straight out in front of me and go around the car/pesestrian I'm slowing down for.

The more cyclists there are the more numptys tou see.

Anyway, I had a pleasurable ride in today. One or two roads required a lot of care because they were covered in rutted, compacted, frozen slush, but other than that, wasn't too bad.

The last couple of days have been fantastic up here. Roads clear but car drivers frightened of getting stuck; really bright and icy cold. Felt really great getting to work/home. I could do this every day!

No ski tracks?! When I was at the Macaulay we always had ski tracks when then it snowed, as well as cycle tracks.

Unless you are a taxi driver (all the taxi drivers in Aberdeen seam to have studded snow tyres), you really shouldn't drive... ;)

I'm glad i left the bike at work this evening. so much slush and ice on the road this evening. traffic that normally goes past my house at 30mph min is now doing 10mph MAX

I just about got home in time.

I left my bike at work on friday and decided that it was too icy this evening to ride it back...last day at work tomorrow so MUST ride it home, despite more snow here tonight and a few days of it icing up the side streets. Still, take my time and it could be fun, although I am very aware of people having off's on the ice over the last few days.

I did my first commute today. The Met Office tells me that my journey home (only 15 minutes, I was working in London so only cycled to the station) was done with thick fog and a temperature of -5.

I'm chuffed to bits that I got in a commute this year, but I think my eyeballs have frozen solid!

I had a hell of a job trying to turn right off the main road this evening. There was so many cars coming the opposite way it took ages. This is somewhat unusual even in rush hour. It was because the road further up was covered in slushy stuff apparently so all the cars were going slower than normal causing a tailback. Naturally the side road I took was covered in it and pitch black. I confess to feeling some satisfaction to hearing the snow/ice crunch under my MTB tyres as I pedalled up the hill. Dunno why!

I overtook a cyclist today.
You're all probably thinking "wow big deal", but I never see any cyclists on my commute and on the rare occassion that I do they are going in the opposite direction. There are other cyclists at work, I just never actually see them.
Anyway, I left 5 minutes earlier than usual today as the MTB with 2.1" knobblies is *so* slow it's cutting into my shower time when I get to work. So as I approach a junction I see a cyclist going past in the direction I go. On leisure rides I usually hope they go too fast for me to catch them up as usually if I overtake them you get that stupid pallava where they just have to overtake you and then go slow again etc. Anyway this cyclist is the new guy from work and he was using his MTB with winter tyres (studded, think they were Marathon's will have an oggle later if his bike is still there). So he was going fairly slow. I overtook him and managed to maintain a distance so that he couldn't catch me up (after the compulsay hello of course). I'm still counting this as a scalp as a) he's younger than me and :wahhey: he is male. So fair game in my book!
