A good tip is to actually drop a gear ... Which makes you pedal faster and gives drivers the impression you have speeded up and thus discourages them from turning on you.
Not heard that one before, good idea. II like to do a nice wide swerve, though obviously not if anyone's coming up my inside from behind
 
I'll only signal left if there's a car waiting to turn out of the minor road or I'm confident of the intentions of cars around me and my ability to comfortably avoid them. Sometimes in the same situation as the OP that'll involve me politely telling the van to go first.
