I always get called 'Big Man'

'Awright Big Man!!'

I have never been sure if I should be sufficiently bothered to find out if its an insult or compliment, i.e. Is it some sort of social grace I've missed learning about? (Although, being a human Stick Insect, I've always imagined it has something to do with my stature).

Actually, I'd be curious to know now!! There are people here from the Glasgow area, surely someone must know!
I get called big man on occasions too. At 6'00" and 12 stone 10, I don't consider myself particularly big! It can be a bit strange when the person addressing you as big man, is about a head taller and one and a half times your width ^_^.

I think it's just a west of Scotland thing, whereby anyone over 5'8" is "big man", and anyone under that height is "wee man". There doesn't seem to be any "normal man".

When I lived up there I noticed a lot of blokes called each other what I thought was "olyun". After a while I worked it it was a heavily accented "Auld Yin". Well that's what I thought it was... I never asked to be honest.

And let's not forget the "orrite PAL" where the PAL sounded to me so aggressive it was scary. Mind you I was a "soft southern interloper" from "Wussyshire"

I used to hate being called kid or kiddo. Oncw at a training seminar a guy kept calling me kid. I told him I was 25 and recently had a kid of my own. His reaction was brilliant. "S**t. I'm 27 and look like I could be your dad." He didn't look anywhere near that old at all but we were on first name terms after that.
