Here's one of my straight razor restorations - shaves as beautifully now as it did back in the 1850s when it was made:

And a couple of my vintage Gillettes after bringing them back to their former glory:

That straight edge thingy at the top is extremely beautiful, but I would instantly lop off my own head if I attempted to shave with that in the mirror!

I thought so too when I got my first straight, especially as you swap it between hands to shave certain bits of your face. But like riding a bike, it just takes a little while to master & get used to before you can do it without thinking.

It's that painful learning curve that would put me off!

I can see the attraction though, they are beautiful instruments

Lidls do some great ones... razor, plus pack of about 20 double blades for about 3 quid or so. I've been using then for a few years now...

+1

these last longer, shave closer, and are way cheaper than the Gillette brigade etc..
Also the venus ones for ladies shave much smoother and last longer I feel. I really just dont 'get' this him/her marketing rubbish they dish out when it comes to stuff like this, deodorants, shampoos etc...ridiculous...
