Some years ago, I got a splinter under my left thumb nail without realising it. A few days later, I woke up in the morning to find my left arm from the elbow downwards was swollen and purple and sort of blue. ;)

So I went to the Doctor, who sent me straight across the road to the A & E dept of the hospital. They said to return the following day for a operation. I asked the nurse if they would need to amputate the thumb, and she said she did not know.:ohmy:

Anyway, operation followed to remove infection etc etc, including removal of some damaged nerves, and the nail. Ginormous bandage on hand and arm in a sling.:ohmy::ohmy:

Not funny, well that's right, it wasn't. Especially when people saw my arm in a sling, and asked what I had done to my arm. They fell about laughing when I said "I had a splinter in my thumb".:laugh:

Sounds nasty, I would not have enjoyed that!

I'm hopeful that mine wont get infected - the nurse at A&E cleaned it up really well after it stopped bleeding!

I've had one dresing change, next one is due Monday, and then again Thursday I think, so they're being good, and nicely concerned, at the local med Centre....

Here's hoping I can get back on the bike soon.....

The problem was that the splinter was not visible, because it had gone deep into the soft skin under the nail. The having a hot bath, must have triggered something and then the swelling.

The most awkward thing was the huge size of the bandage, presumably so it did not get knocked again. Even being right-handed, I had lots of problems doing things with just one hand. The nail grew back as normal.

If you have nurses changing the dressing on it, they obviously know what they are doing, make sure you do not miss your appointments. Are you able to shower or have a bath?

I can soak in the bath, not shower though. The problem I have is that it's quite a deep wound, which could start bleeding again, I just don't wanna take the risk....;)

I shift cages at work, and drive, which I've been advised not to do for a while....can't ride my Scooter, nor my bike....

All I can do is walk:ohmy:
