Some years ago, I got a splinter under my left thumb nail without realising it. A few days later, I woke up in the morning to find my left arm from the elbow downwards was swollen and purple and sort of blue.
So I went to the Doctor, who sent me straight across the road to the A & E dept of the hospital. They said to return the following day for a operation. I asked the nurse if they would need to amputate the thumb, and she said she did not know.

Anyway, operation followed to remove infection etc etc, including removal of some damaged nerves, and the nail. Ginormous bandage on hand and arm in a sling.

Not funny, well that's right, it wasn't. Especially when people saw my arm in a sling, and asked what I had done to my arm. They fell about laughing when I said "I had a splinter in my thumb".
