I bought a Ridgeback World Tour Voyage touring bike last year and have found it to be a very good all round tourer, shopper, winter bike - just like a 'bike' used to be many years ago, before they all became specialist niche products.

I've been very happy with it apart from one thing......the brakes!
The standard fitment brakes are Tektro Oryx cantilevers.
http://www.tektro.com/_english/01_products/01_prodetail.php?pid=51&sortname=Brake&sort=1&fid=2
The front one isn't too bad but needs a grip like a Gorilla. The rear is abysmal. Both are very 'wooden' in feel. Both screech incessantly in the wet and on long, dry, downhill runs.
I've done all the usual stuff like trying several different types of brake pads, ensuring all the cables are smooth, making sure the angles are all correct according to Sheldon Brown etc.
Nothing seemed to make any real improvement.
Researching on the internet shows that this is a common problem, generally, with cantis (Yes, yes, I know, your cantis work perfectly, can't see any problem, buy better ones, you've not set them up properly..... blahdy blah.......). It also came up with several threads where guys have had the same problems and have changed to Mini V Brakes with good results. As with most internet stuff, I generally take it with a pinch of salt.
Anyway, I decided to take the plunge and purchase some of these:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/tektro-926al-mini-v-brake/rp-prod34580
For less than £25 delivered I thought it was worth the punt.
I also needed a couple of adjustable noodles to complete the job:
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/cables/tektro-91712-v-brake-lead-pipe-with-adjuster-90-deg/
LBS did the converion for me today for a very reasonable £20, including new cables and bar tape.

Verdict?
A vast improvement on the cantis! :okay:
Both brakes are very powerful and modulate better. Two finger braking is now the order of the day. This is how the brakes should be on a bike like this; it ain't a lightweight and sometimes carries quite a load. It needs good brakes!!
I am now a very happy bunny.^_^

This now begs the question............why do manufacturers of touring bikes insist on fitting sub standard brakes? I know cantis are 'traditional' (whatever that means), but if a cheaper, better alternative is available - why not fit it as standard?

Thanks for that. Something to think about. I'm extremely happy with my Ridgeback Panorama, but have had the same issue with the brakes. Hmmmm.

Seriously well worth doing.
I bought the cheapest Mini V brakes available, I daresay more expensive ones could be even better.

My touring bike canti brakes are also crap. I changed to tektro 520 and they are still crap. The front cable hanger is too bendy and I can't fit a stiff aluminium one on my headset. An "up-hanger" interferes with the dynamo front lamp mount.
How do mini-V brakes integrate with rack and mudguards?
If I was getting a modern tourer I would opt for disk brakes. My commuter bike has Shimano cable disks which are reliable in all weathers and trouble-free.

No problem, they just go straight on. I'll post a picture later today.

Try changing the brake blocks first, I'm using Tektro Canti's on my cross-check but switched the blocks to Kool Stops.....
Tried them, as alluded to in original post - brakes were still nowhere near good enough.

I've just done the same conversion on my wife's Ridgeback Tour, as she was having difficulty in stopping on all but the gentlest gradient. She was seriously worried about touring with loaded panniers.
She is now over the moon with the bike and says that the new brakes are giving her absolutely no cause for concern.
I have emailed Ridgeback with my thoughts on the original brakes on both bikes and the mini V conversion. Also, why they still fit cantis as standard even though a much better and cheaper alternative is available.
I'm waiting on their reply.

I had similar problems with an old Dawes Galaxy. I sold it and bought a bike with better brakes. This option is cheaper.
Retailing a bike aimed at heavily-loaded tourers, possibly in hill country, should include reassuring riders the brakes actually work.

If my missus had gone down any half decent hill with it heavily loaded, there is no way that she would have been able to stop.
How do cycle manufactures get away with selling any bike with sub standard brakes? Can you imagine any other vehicle manufacturer getting away with that? The solution is actually, by about £5 per bike, cheaper for them to install at the production stage than the problem brakes, so they would also be quids in. It's a no brainer.
'Tradition' is a fat lot of use when you're trying to stop for a T junction at the bottom of a hill and the bike is barely slowing.
I'm surprised no one hasn't sued the ass off them so far.

My Gtech has Tektro V brakes like you've fitted and they are excellent, as good as my Shimano disk brakes.

The original cantilever setup was destined to be crap from the start as the cable isn't pulling in the right direction..

Yes, I did this too (on my Cross Check) and it was a marked improvement but not enough. I swapped out the front fork for one off a Straggler and put a disc brake on. Still cantis on the rear but my 12-mile commute is not too hilly and I can now stop in the rain. :okay:
