Both bikes geared the same, the R5 is more nimble on the descents as well as being lighter for climbing. I believe there is the right bike for the right job. When i tour i use the MTB with slicks on, Horses for courses.

I agree with the OP, my best bike weighs 2 kgs less and is stiffer than my all-round bike. It is definitely faster up hills, the stiffness makes it feel very sure when descending and the brakes are fantastic but I wouldn't take it for a 100 mile trip thanks to the stiffer ride.

Take the bike that is harder work hill climbing. It will have a better training effect. No point trying to make training easier.

No it won't! You will still work at the same rate but you will probably climb the hill one or two gears slower.

In which case you will work at the same rate for longer i.e. Burn more energy in total.
