Yep in the middle of nowhere when you have a puncture. Possibly in a park or on a dark towpath. Then a head mounted very bright light maybe useful.

On a 4 lane London dual carriageway while your head is turning from side to side like an owl on a feckin turntable, I would argue it's less useful. And when you looked directly at me and did your smiley wavey sh*te it didn't make me happy.

I have a very low powered one

I'm with you on this but with the observation that if it's of the be seen type it can be useful when your approach to side roads is lined with parked cars obstructing the view of emerging drivers.

I'll happily go along with that. Something similar to a small cateye and possibly even on flash

This one was like one of my Hope1s being pointed at my face. I was not impressed

As a pedestrian I have been taken by surprise twice recently in busy cities by unlit cycles when about to cross the road. The cyclists had helmet lights but to see these required me to elevate my vision way above the horizontal, which is not where I would tend to look for approaching road vehicles. Not good:sad:.

it's the nobbers with very bright helmet lights who have a nobbery tendency to look directly at all other cyclists as if to say "Look at my very bright light" They're total and utter nobbers.
And often no front light mounted on the bike itself.

No. Ride further out to see and be seen in that situation. The nobbers who emerge too fast won't be looking above the cars for small bright lights anyway, or might mistake it for a streetlight further away. There's no excuse for cycling with a head torch on.

In between here and there
Never really noticed until this year well lit urban roads and lots of cyclists have all their lights on full wack and horizontal, I don't get it really and the Helmets just the topping on the cake. Same with rears I was over taken by someone who had been drafting me for a while and then realised that there was a headwind I had too slow down to put some distance between me and the flashing rally bright lights. In some respects I think they are causing more danger to the rider than they prevent.
