In praise of Man Bags..

And pockets wear out if you are continually putting change etc. in them. I first got a "man-bag" because I was fed up of holes in my pockets, and have regularly carried one now for over 40 years. the one I currently carry has lasted for about 10 years so far, and showing little sign of wear.

I do still usually put my phone and car keys in my pocket, but rarely anything else.

Nowadays pocket do last massively longer as we have little or any changes in them!

Probably true. I think it was mainly the loose change which wrecked them. But I do also carry more than would be comfortable in just triuser pockets, and I arrely wear coats. If I'm wearing a shirt with a pocket, that usually holds a pair of reading glasses. Otherwise there is always at least one pair in my bag, plus a pen or two, a small notebook, my wallet, a nylon shopping bag, my spare contact lenses and hearing aid wax stops.

I do have two brown/tan leather shoulder bags, probably meant for both genders to use. They are roughly about 14 inches in width and 12 inches in height. I also have two canvas and leather shoulder bags, one in olive green, one in black, both the same make and about 18 inches in width, 14 inches in height. I rarely use the leather ones these days and haven't used the canvas and leather ones since I had my dog in a dog stroller 5 years ago. I only tend to use the leather ones when going to a pub with my dog, when I put a water bottle, dog bowl and treats in for him. I'm one of those who when given more space, or carrying capacity tends to fill that space and/or carrying capacity with items I could quite go without, so I do tend to put stuff in the bags I don't really need, like clothes brushes, medical plasters, paracetamol packets, a compact mirror, tape measure, football whistle, biros, emergency supply of any gentleman's fine fragrance, neck tie, mini sewing kit, Worthers Originals, safety razor, small scissors, The Chaps Guide to dressing etiquette book, etc etc.🧐

Why would I want to carry a compact mirror and a football whistle, you may ask.🤔 Well, in my hill/fell dog walking days, I'd carry both items, in case I had a serious fall and would be unable to make my way home, or to the nearest A&E department. I would then use the mirror, on sunny days of couse, to reflect the sun's rays at any passers by, alerting them of my presence. They would either ignore it, or hopefully come over for a confrontation, enabling me to point out my predicament. The whistle would come into use if the sun wasn't shining, meaning I'd blow as loud as possible, for as long as possible till hopefully the noise of the whistle was heard, alerting others that something wasn't quite right. Yes, I know that I'm very unlikely to have a serious fall on the way to and from a pub, and if I did someone would hopefully see me asap, but old habits tend to die hard.🧐
