y'day I walked past one of my fave buildings in Sussex. Hove, actually.

No. 4 Third Avenue. A picture can't do it justice.

Perhaps I should have said renovate.

That is before the most recent fire and after the previous one. The windows are just wrong though.
I did a lot of the interior wood work, wiring, the garage roof (after it was done wrong), the front garden wall and gateposts, plus some other bits and pieces.
Much of my work was done before the previous fire, after the one that came before that one.

There has been a lot of fires in that house!

What a lovely building to work in! Of course it may not be so practical on the inside in a modern world. Out of interest do you know if the style carried on inside the building? I have no idea what is on the other side of the road as I always look to that side if I'm going along there.

its a rabbit warren in there! to get to the top floor you need to get in one lift to the 4th floor, go down 1 floor walk through some office space and then take another lift all the way to the top!! its all open plan offices in there (the 70s style building to the right of it is part of the offices as well)

I would hope the insurance people would get suspicious the next time they need improvements.

Building on the left was a pub, closed in 2003.
Building on the right was a picture house, closed by the Luftwaffe when it was bombed during the blitz.

On Piemaster's first link, pan around to the left a bit till you see the decorating shop partly obscured by a lamppost... that's what I called the last fella we had in to do a bit of painting in the house

What is that? It's horrible! The front gables look brand new; the side gable is clearly not. That execrescence on the roof adds a note of comedy. It's like a Teutonic nightmare transplanted into Oxfordshire - quite out of keeping with the local area because of the bizarre roofline angles.

Architects and wealthy people find it difficult to keep their egos out of building design.

I'm proud to say that my Dad's best friend was an architect who built some fascinating stuff. He got our family into mountaineering and was always a bit of a role model for me; family holidays were usually camping in Scotland, climbing with him and his wife. At various times as a yoof I laboured for him on different gardening and building projects, cycling seven miles each way every day to do so. He and my Dad (who was a village GP) built the first ever purpose-designed surgery in the UK, it was quite ground-breaking and people travelled from all over the world to visit and photograph it.

I went to look at Peter Aldington's housing designs when I was a student in the late 70s, ... he was in partnership with John Craig at the time.
