Selected images of slightly stereotyped 'style icons' wearing berets with a view to looking cool in them generally look cool.

This is particularly true among social groups who see tacit (or loud) approval of whichever look is being lauded as something which will enhance their own 'cool'.

I cannot help recalling that the chap who almost killed Charles de Gaulle with a bespoke rifle he'd hidden in a pair of crutches was wearing a beret.

I think this tells us all about berets that we need to know. I thank God that de Gaulle survuved the attempt (by bending to kiss a soldier) and is alive and well to this day.
