... noise cancelling, well, reducing, headphones.

This week some thieving git stole my Denon over-ear headset from my desk whilst I was in a meeting. Great workplace huh?

This cause me to bring in another headset, one I used to use on flights. When I switched the noise cancelling on before a call... bliss... the hubbub of the open plan and the constant noise of A/C, PC fans, et cetera was much diminished.

What a joy. With the added bonus that if I keep them on all the time, to benefit from the noise reduction folk with think I'm on conference calls and will leave me alone instead of forming a queue at my deskside with their pleas to do aspects of their jobs for them.

So lovely peeps, noise reducing headsets in the workplace, boon or bane?

Boon in the workplace - a pain in the arse in the home (Mr R has taken to wandering around the house in my noise canceling headphones listening to his geek podcasts, unable to hear me if I'm talking to him).
I bet he doesn't see the downside.

A friend of mine has a conference call hat, if the hat's on - no disturb.

In our office, to wear headphones continuously when not on a call is regarded as an overt statement of disengagement and therefore a little suspect.

I've never got them off at work. Can't think of anything more tedious then the inane chat that goes on. I've either got tunes on or listening to an audiobook. Used to be just me with headphones in but there is now 4 or 5 of us.

At my desk my headset is on for calls for five hours a day...

...not being on a call is seen as a sign of laziness ;)
