Depends on the enviroment. I believe hospital workers and similar need to have a refresher once a year.
But i think 3 years is about right for general public.

3 years for H&S at work..

As Arch said, the priority has changed on resusc.

It used to be that you would give rescue breaths before compressions, you had to place your hand carefully before compression and there were fewer compressions between rescue breaths.

Now, (assuming all previous steps have been taken) it is straight into 30 compressions before 2 breaths (and repeat). No precise placing of hands, just so long as they are in the approx area.

As a handy reminder, the song "Nelly the Elephant" has 15 beats and is sung at about the right pace, so 2 rounds of that between breaths. Not to be sung out loud though, you may upset someone.

He can easily sue the Boris bikes for not providing a helmet. And because it was his right of way well other issues can occur. If cyclists knew first aid then there would be less dislike of them.

1) how its not a legal requirement - thankfully
2) no such thing as right of way- priority maybe, but not RoW
3) I am a 4 day 1st aider and defib trained. looking at becoming a community first responder and I ride

Of course they shouldn't. They're perfectly visible, and even have their lights running in the daytime.

If you feel that you need one, get one for yourself, a very few boris bikers feel that way.

no checking for pulse any more . its worth adding that if they ain't breathing and have no pulse whatever you do isn't going to make it any worse than it already is . as you said pushing in the right area is helping circulate the blood which will still contain a fair amount of oxygen.

I already knew that one, but our trainer also suggested the BeeGees 'Stayin' Alive'. Even less tactful....

If, in the stress of the moment, one forgot oneself and sang out loud, I like to think no one would care, as long as you were doing your best to help, and especially if you were successful. Alas, I fear someone would complain.

How can they sue Boris Bikes, helmets are not compulsory and if they were they'd ruin the scheme, just look at the Melbourne Bike Scheme; anyway I don't think CoG even mentions a helmet
Edit: he does in his later posts

Easy. You can sue anyone for anything. Doesn't mean you have a case or will win but you can sue nevertheless. Just as I could sue you for "hurt feelings" for what you just said. Just a case of filling in the forms and it would get thrown out on its ear but I've still sued you.

Am I the only one who read this as being in jest, then?

I thought it was written by someone who is very, very new to cycling and does not know what they are talking about. I am not new to cycling, but often don't know what the hell I am wittering on about...

Always worthwhile giving your details to both the police (who'll be concerned with criminal offence side of things) AND to the injured party, who may later be more concerned with the civil side of things, long after police have closed the file. Might make it easier for him to contact you - if of course you wish to be!

I have slips (maybe should go for business cards if ICBA) with my contact details on so I can just hand them over and they don't have the problem of trying to write something down with a shaky/injured hand in the dark and/or rain with a pen that's not much good.
