We had a brilliant evening tonight hill climbing here in Wales. Me and the ex brother in-law got a little carried away and tackled some of the more steeper hills around here than we usually attempt and ended up getting to the dizzy height of 1000 feet of hill climbing. The interesting part though was the "drop" the other side. His bike totally out classed mine with his disc brakes. While I was on the ragged edge in contemplating the bends with my ancient rim brakes ,he was flying round the corners with the confidence of his disc brakes. On a long straight though my road bike showed it's true colours against his hybrid mountain bike when I crouched down low behind the bars and flew past him. I managed to hit 40 mph which made the bike feel very twitchy. At the bottom we both finished unscathed and with a big smile planted on our faces.
I,m really happy for him ,because he's been suffering for years now with an undiagnosed contidion were he can't take a full deep breath and fill his lungs without pain. Tonight though ,he said at the start of the climb he felt something " crack" in his chest and immediately after he was able to take deep breaths. He's had countless scans and x-ray but nobody seems to be able to diagnose what it could be.
It was good to see him out enjoying him self again after all this time of limiting his bike rides. The only thing that was missing was a pub stop halfway around :-).
