It's a bit more complicated than that...
The problem is that many of the rates offered on the comparison sites are tempter rates and not comparing like for like. When you actually try buying insurance at the rate offered, the price suddenly goes up significantly as everything added in.
Not strictly true. The price offered is the price you will pay for the cover you are offered. If you then change your mind about the cover you want you will pay more.

Admiral sent me a renewal letter yesterday - for both me and the Mrs on the two cars we own was £500, £200 more than last year. So off I went and did a search on the usual web sites and came back with a cheapest quote of just over £300... with Admiral.

That really takes the proverbial.

Did something similar with my renewal from Priviledge - renewal £260 but a quote of £155 inputting identical details on their own web site and also got the same result when using a comparison site (they were also the cheapest). Two minutes on the phone and they agreed to the £155. I wouldn't mind, but I had to do exactly the same last year.
