After my accident I've been thinking of getting personal accident cover. Has anyone got it and claimed? Is it as straightforward to claim as the quotes suggest....or do the companies wriggle out somehow?

Depends what you maen by PA cover, for your own fault accidents or someone else's? Are you looking for personal cover or bike damage cover, because both can be expensive. Try checking out BC for third party cover, and their legal help is very good provided it's someone else's fault, it all comes with membership.

I've got it via work and it covers me for any accident if I'm unable to work again.

You need to decide what cover you want a) inability to work b) loss income whilst off work, etc.

No experience of making a claim but as ever, read the small print before signing and check that you're not also covered by others means eg work

I've already got ctc third party insurance (although I think it may have just lapsed). I've had a few online quotes and they seem reasonable - £157 pa for personal accident cover and loss of earnings for £500 per week and up to £10,000 for injury.

Not too bothered about loss of earnings at the moment as I'm a student, tho this will change in Sept 2013. If whilst doing my masters, I go the short term contract route my earnings will be covered, but if I go ad hoc they won't so then it will be relevant.

I'm just sat here thinking, if I'd been in a car and had a non fault accident, at least I'd have got some money for my troubles and private physio sessions.

I haven't even looked at my bike yet, must be ok tho I rode it home.

Car insurance policies have measely payouts for death or personal injury. If you are a killed in a non fault accident ie another party is liable and insured then your Estate will sue this party for compensation ie loss of earnings to support your family. As has been mentioned some employers provide free life insurance as part of the employment however many are only "death in service" schemes which may mean if you died outside the scope of your wortk then you might not recieve a single penny. If you are serious about insuring your life then best to take specialist advice suited to your own circumstances. If you are not working, have no family to support, dependents or large financial committments eg mortgage, it would seem questionable whether insuring your life was worthwhile. Maybe joining BC, CTC or LCC for their 3rd party insurance cover and legal assistance might be sufficient for your current needs. But you can insure any thing if you are prepared to pay the premium. Smaller value high risk items it might be better to self insure. There is life insurance and life assurance. They are quite different.
