In the 1920s it took 2 hours to get from Birmingham New Street to London Paddington. It now takes 2 hours and 20 minutes.

And New St to Bournemouth is now 3h 9m against 4h 40m in the picture. But that comes at a price.
It used to be 2s 6d (12.5p) for a single, but it's now (takes a deep breath and prepares to enter the confusing world of ticket prices) Cheapest is £22.60 for an is a standard class advance single. That's not bad, a mere 180x the 1920s price. A quick google says that inflation means that todays prices are 77x 1925 prices. So it has roughly doubled in real terms. Not shocking.
But if you aren't into advance planning, an off peak single is £134.10. An anytime single is £141.60. And if you want to pay as much as possible, an anytime first class is £312!
Interesting picture, thanks
