A couple of my mates know that I belong to this forum, but they are cyclists, not quite as committed as me, but they do go out at weekends sometimes and one does ride to work occasionally. One of them is also a twitcher and goes onto one of their forums, so he can't really say much to me.

I told one person I was on a cycling forum and he looked at me like I'd just asked if he minded me sleeping with his Mother so I decided against sharing at that point. However, everyone else just thinks I'm a great researcher and have so much cycling knowledge when I forward the great links and other info I find on here.

I didn't mind being criticised for spending too much time on CycleChat, because I was. I've cut down now.
What I got really annoyed about was being told that there was something inherently 'sad' about using a forum like this at all. I asked how many interesting new people the critics had met last year through their online activities (I think I met 11 CC members last year). How many hours did they spend keeping fit in lovely places like the South Pennines, the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland? How many people had they offered help to or been given help by? How many crap TV programmes had they watched while I was on the forum?

I like the forum because I reckon that you lot are alot more diverse than the people I meet every day and like getting different perspectives on stuff. This was the point I was trying to make to my brother that you are a great bunch of guys. Definitely came off as a nutter with imaginary friends! (did point out he could get good bike advice too)

I originally came (went) to C+ (and thence to here) looking for a wee bit of practical info when I started getting back into cycling, and fairly quickly started to enjoy the light-hearted banter that went (and still goes) on. That's it for me really. Info and banter. A daily shot of both. In a generally supportive atmos, and there are some times when this forum has had me wetting myself laughing, or has made me blub a bit.
I'm still useless at practical stuff, but I've learned a lot. A couple of years ago, the thought of adjusting my derailleurs would have had me running to the bike shop. Last weekend, I had a go myself, and it worked. Thanks to things I read on here, basically.
I suppose there's something 'odd' about forums to some folk, but it won't be to the next generation... Mrs F and the kids know about this forum, but they have no interest in looking to see what drivel I put up here.
But there is more to this place... someone very kindly sent me some cleat/shoe plates through the post. I was impressed by that kindness, and I try to pass that on where I can. And I've met 5 forum people in real life... all thoroughly nice and friendly people. I don't tell my friends I come on here, basically because I prefer the anonymity, and some of them genuinely wouldn't get it. Over a beer, the subject of forums once came up (a friend's missus had started using a gardening one, and got in on the banter there)... he asked 'why would you want to write stuff to complete strangers?' Well, fair enough, but it works for me.

Folks think I'm decidedly weird at work for being on a cycling forum, yet funnily enough they don't see visiting football websites and forums weird. Obviously because football's a man's game and we cyclists are a bunch of sad nancy-boys who get off on wearing lycra... 
I daren't tell them that I've just joined the Badger&Blade forums (for those who're into old-school shaving). I mentioned that I shaved with an 80yr-old razor last night and you'd think I'd just confessed to a murder by the looks on their faces! I'll keep the news of my 1958 Gillette Fatboy, 1965 Slim Adjustable and 1955 Superspeed to myself now.
