52 isn't to old to start

But a £100 budget could prove an obstacle. You will likely get something incredibly heavy ,the gears will quickly seize and the pedals will fall off.

Treble that budget and get yourself to a decathlon store. Or carefully look for something used from giant / trek / specialized

Don’t think he ever started as he hasn’t been seen since he posted!

I actually started at 52 just as I took early retirement. I was mad keen for several years, bad sadly the love for cycling has dwindled the last few years and I‘m lucky if I get out a dozen times in the summer months.

Could just wander into a decent local bike shop and ask them if they know if anyone has one for sale

Ours often has bits and pieces at the back that I presume he keeps for spares and stuff
You might just get lucky and come at a time when someone has just bought on for £300 and has his old one for sale

The LBS will probably at least try to help they will see you as a possible future customer for upgrades!

Apologies, it's just my sense of humour, and needing to find a little humour whilst looking after a cantankerous elderly mother!

I thought of resurrecting the thread as I've just started cycling again at 64, well, I say cycling, I've had a nice Thorn Club Tour rebuilt, I just need to get out for a few slow leisurely miles now. Especially as I've just bought a smart looking Carradice saddle bag, just the thing for picnics

because I should be looking at allotments at me age? I'm thinking about spending 100 quid on something - nothing flash as Ill only be using it for a month

I had an allotment when I was in my mid-30s and into my 40s and it was much harder work than cycling! I ordered some manure from a local dairy a few times, first time I did it I wasn't sure what to expect and this enormous tractor arrived and dumped a huge pile of it in the roadway. Shovelled and barrowed it on my own (it was more satisfying than it sounds but I was pretty sore afterwards). Then there was the winter digging, harvesting potatoes...

Sounds good

Picnics are a damn good alternative to a cafe stop!

a proper ride needs one or the other
