Probably a lot... one of my workmates is 5'2" and he is always being told how short he is, much to his annoyance. I'm about 6'4" and am always being given 'top shelf' price cards to put up/take down at work, and I'm often complaining about the constant height discrimination I'm subjected to.... i must have a word with the area manager.Whilst ordering a meal at the bar in a quiet pub I thought the floor level must have been raised behind the bar as it felt as if the barmaid was looking down on me. When she delivered the meal to my table I realised her height had not been enhanced by a raised floor, she was a tall young woman.
As I munched through my meal other male customers arrived one by one and indulged in some small talk as the drink was being dispensed. I heard two of them informing the barmaid that she was very tall. I felt sorry for her as she politely agreed that indeed she was tall, and wondered how many times in a week she had to listen to sizeism comments.
Being able to walk around with a smarmy look on your face and pretend to be a don.Thread prompted by a conversation with my cousin’s daughter, who is exceptionally tall for her age (10), shows every sign of being a 6 footer when she’s fully grown and seems to be a bit uncomfortable about it.
As a relatively tall man (6’2”) my immediate reaction to her question “what’s so good about being tall?” was a lacklustre “I like it”. Followed by “I never have problems getting things off the top shelf in supermarkets”
I *do* like being fairly tall, but I can’t quantify why.
In practical terms it’s often a bit awkward - getting into tight spaces, finding clothes that fit (although that’s less of a problem now than it was a few years ago), cramping back seat car passengers because I have to push the driver’s seat all the way back...
What are the positives?
Good nutrition? Half the kids I know are always indulging in crisps, burgers, sweets and fizzy drinks.I reckon it’s due to good nutrition that generally kids are bigger now.
I’m 5’10 ‘ my dad is about 5’8 and my 14 year old son is already 6ftand growing everyday. My wife is only 5ft 2 and our 11 year old daughter has almost caught her up already.
Being freekshly tall is a bit weird but kids are just bigger now.
Being reasonably tall means you always get asked by sweet old dears to get things down from the top shelves, who then proceed tell you what an angel you are.Being too short to reach the top shelves in supermarkets means you always have to ask for help though.
The only thing I'm complaining about is being called an angel afterwardsBeing reasonably tall means you always get asked by sweet old dears to get things down from the top shelves, who then proceed tell you what an angel you are.
Mrs CK is 4 foot 6 ", mind you she did stop growing at 11 due to chemoMr M and myself are both 5’2”
Sister’s 11year old daughter is catching up fast.
A physio I was being treated by for a trapped nerve in my neck said I had bad posture (upper back and neck) which apparently can be common in taller people because we stoop, unconsciously, to be at the same level as shorter people when interacting with themMy son who is 6' 2" has a lot of back trouble is that a common thing in tall people ? I can't comment as he is 4" taller than me, and 8" taller than Mrs Afnug although our daughter is 2" smaller than her mother, I think he likes being tall but I remember him buying lots of jeans when younger and never being quite happy with the leg length, I was though, he kept me in jeans for years even though a touch long.
