I am off to the RHS. The wife has some friends that I call the Rocky Horror Show for a variety of reasons. I don't expect to enjoy myself, hopefully my kids will play up and I will have to bring one of them home before midnight. I used to love a good NYE, but over the years have slowly been turned off by it. I sound like a miserable git, but it is only this night that does it to me.

Yup,

His mum and brother now live in Aus, and he's visited a few times.

Neat job, all it lacks is a couple of ashtrays on the bar.

Some try too hard, which makes it awkward. Just chill is the best option.

When the in-laws still lived locally they always used to throw a big open house do on NYE, which we attended and (mostly) enjoyed, even if it could get a bit chaotic at times. However, they've long since moved to France so that doesn't happen any more and to be honest I don't really miss it.
Plus the dog is getting old and is terrified by fireworks so we can't really leave him on his own as there is always one numpty in the street that overdoes them at midnight.

So, tonight I'll see about putting a dent in the bottle of Jura that Mrs ND got me, probably asleep before midnight, get awoken by the re-enactment of the siege of Baghdad over the road at midnight and then up early-ish tomorrow and out on the bike for the first ride of 2017.

From a historical perspective and not a very scientific one, I've lived on the same street on a very average estate for 30 years. Parties were par for the course years ago, any time of the year, there were always one or two in the street but especially on NYE. Slowly it's stopped...No-one bothers any more, it's very rare you'll hear one.
Probably because modern life means people are so transient nowadays, no-one gets that friendly with neighbours anymore.
I think thats the same everywhere. I also think a lot of it is because every weekend is party night where as years ago people would only get a good scoop on rare celebrations. I still think its a special night, where everyone joins in. Well, i thought they did until i read this thread.

I'm a night owl anyway and still a good couple of hours away from heading off to the Land of Nod. Am sitting here watching the bongs and the fireworks on the telly, but the evening's been no different from a usual saturday night; onesie, tea, cake, kitty cuddles, surfing the internet and a dvd.

Parties aren't my thing, I'm afraid.

Mr6 and the children insist we stay up to "see the new year in" I'd rather go to bed. They complain that I'm spoiling the night, but if I go to bed they get more upset.
We watched telly for a bit. It was crap. I was tired. They were tired. Midnight came. We went to bed.
I don't get the fuss at all.

We are going out for the first time in the 26 years we have been together. The local pub, invitation only, a glass of fizz when we arrive, two bands and a free burger late on. If we don't really enjoy it then we'll not bother again.
That was actually rather fun, the music was good, the food excellent and the company even better. The staff worked really hard with big smiles on their faces and we chatted to people we knew and some that we didn't. We will do it again.

First of all Humble pie was eaten. The couple we went to normally do a house party of about 20,and it's just too much for me.Well last night 10 in all some arrived 9ish,some left 11-30ish.It was quiet,no loud music playing, able to talk without shouting and able to hear with both my hearing aids.Food for about tewnty, wonderful,we all took a little something.I ate one jacket spud, but two small cakes and a small slice of xmas cake.My stomach did not need more food. Two non alco bottles of pop/beer Erdinger or something like. Then back home for 01-00.I have to say i did enjoy it.
