You can rip the .flv files and convert them to something to view on your iPod. Allegedly.

However, I understand that doing so is not legal, in the same way that recording from the TV or radio for later personal consumption is not legal.

If I type the word 'you' in to Google it obligingly offers me a number of searches.
It appears that the Google search 'youtube to mp3' has been performed about 157 million times.
If I select this option Google then gives me the results which include the site www.video2mp3.net , which does just what it says. The result is an mp3 file in your PC.
Is this site and this sort of activity illegal ? If so , why is it still permitted ?

As far as I know, it's illegal to share/make money out of pirated material - but not to download or use. But don't quote me on that

Like snakehips and User76 have suggested it's not just as easy as sticking them on your ipod. Youtube use embedded flash for the videos. You'll need a converter of some sort (if you're talking about just using the sound file), most of which are websites, or add-ons to Firefox ect. that link to websites. They'll strip the sound from the video and allow you to download the resulting mp3 file. I've used the video2mp3 plug in for Firefox to download the sound from friends videos, though copying and pasting the link into their website works in exactly the same way if you're not using Firefox.

If you're talking about the full video then downloadhelper might help out. It downloads the flash file, but you'd still need some way of converting it into an mp4 format.

From a legal standpoint I'm pretty sure it's frowned upon. I guess it's no different to downloading the mp3/video from a torrent site (unless they are videos/soundtracks of non-copywritten material). I doubt anyone would start a legal battle with you though for 120 tracks. I guess it comes down to how you feel about it?

The quality of the music that is on youtube is pretty poor in my experience. By the time you've downloaded it and converted it you'll probably be wishing you had bought it of Amazon or Play........uTorrent? Cough cough, splutter.

I've used the video2mp3 site in the past and it works well.

These sites and add-ons are probably only legal because of some loophole in the law (keep in mind I'm no lawyer and am happy to be corrected on this) that allows them to do this because it's assumed that any video/soundtrack etc uploaded to the sites they offer these services too are for non-copywritten material (i.e. personal, which is essentially why youtube started). I'd imagine it's youtube's responsibility to make sure that copywritten material is deleted (and they have on a few occasions disabled the soundtrack or deleted videos for that very reason).

But I reckon you'd be safe converting them for personal use, assuming you don't find it objectionable. Any company looking for financial recompense would be starting legal battles with the person who uploaded it first, then the service that made it public, and then the service that allowed you to convert it. Legally, I doubt you have much to worry about, morally... well, that's your call.

That's true. 128kbps at best. I wouldn't call it poor though. It's still pretty good, miles better than anything that was available in a portable format 5-10 years ago (anyone remember home recorded tapes?). If you're just looking for a bit of entertainment on the bus then it's fine. If you're looking for hi-fi sound quality though it's probably worth spending the money on the CD or at least a higher quality download from iTunes etc.

Downloadhelper has it's own little add-in, which will convert the video to whatever format you like. One of the options is "ipod". Allegedly.

Are you sure? I know that you need a TV licence irrespective of your download device, but I can't see that there are any copyright or other issues of all you do is watch the recording yourself.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'd just like to know. I can't find the answer on the Beeb site.
