Without it being connected to mains power ?

Only reason i ask is as i've signed up to our clubs winter training schedule & every other wednedsay we are setting up in a local village hall & doing sessions i think using cadence to start , won't have the laptop etc to adjust resistance etc , is it ok to use like this , guess i could take an extension lead & plug it in if need be ?

It's fine to do this, but the resistance is minimal so you'll have to use a higher gear to keep the cadence within comfortable limits. You'll achieve speeds that you normally only dream about.
