I tend to wear bib shorts and leg warmers throughout the winter as I prefer them to longs - don't really know why TBH just a little quirk I have.

I do have a pair of Castelli Nonoflex leg warmers and they are pretty warm though.

Put the longs on last week, also winter bike next week, unless, hopefully it's sunshine and no rain in Cheshire........

Roubaix fabric longs anytime it's below 16c, lighter longs between 16-20c. Knee joints don't look after themselves. Warm and dry joints unless you want to up the arthritis chances when older. Which means (almost) all casual riding in UK in longs or 3/4 at least, because this is not the warmest country most of the time.

Definitely. About 6 degrees here in the Midlands. I've known it warmer in January.

Max of 6 and 3.5 this morning .Did a turbo session with the shed door open and although i was sweating like a pig my feet were white .

6 to 13 Shorts and long sleeves
Below 4c to 6c longs with long sleeves
Below 4c long-sleeved baselayer and windslam type jacket with longs

I've been wearing 3/4s or lightweight longs for a few weeks now, but the warm longs came out yesterday and I was glad of them.
Looks like they'll be a regular fixture now given this week's forecast.

I've been in longs for about a month now, I've been using overshoe's for about a week now as well.

I'm stunned by the people who claim to be "hard" and stay in shorts when it's cold. Zero respect for their own joints. The bill for this less than sensible approach may well arrive later in life. Humans function best when warm, not using up energy to battle cold that can easily be avoided with a bit of common sense.

Is there actually any science in this assertion or is it an old wife's tale?

The reason I ask is because you don't need to go very far inside the body for the temperature to be pretty constant. Sure surface temperature varies a lot. Isn't it the case that only about 30% of the energy used in making movement is actually making the movement, the other 70% is lost as heat. So all those nice warm deep muscles in our legs that surround the knee for example, keep the joint at normal working temperature

i well remember years ago turning up for CTC countryride one morning - about 10 degrees. Was met with shock that I was in shorts. Took their advice and shot home to change. Ever since have tended to use longs if the day temperature will consistently be below 10 or 11.
