It's a response to boredom.
Bored with being with the same person for 30 odd years, bored with doing the same stuff, having the same conversations, bored with work, kids have left home... - it doesn't affect everybody, of course, but a significant number who feel the need to spice up their lives.

The voice of experience.

I started puberty early, at about 10 years of age. I think my mid-life crisis started about 20 minutes later and has continued unabated ever since!

I've passed 50, I still play football with other child-like oldsters, many of us have always had motorbikes too, 90% now cycle, we've never grown up. But we have friends who have never done any sports for 30+ years, when they'd grown up. These guys look, dress, move and talk like they are our fathers and we talk about this a lot.......... behind their backs.

Some is a reaction to actually now having a little money to spend, and a small window in which to spend it before kids going to University happens.
I am usually included anyway when my wife starts talking about 'the kids', which is ok, because I never intend to start behaving maturely.

You'll get a lot of very silly responses when asking about mid life crisis, but in all seriousness it is essentially a form of depression.

I've read hat the reason that men (typically) who in mid life crisis indulge in thrill seeking activities is because it's some kind of attempt to awken feelings as they feel dead and numb inside.

We treat it as a joke, but speaking as someone who's life and family was torn apart (and heart broken) due in large part to mid life crisis, I can assure you that it's not really that funny.

I've friend who received a large inheritance, at 51, he's bought an SL500 and left the gym we have used together for 5 years, for a "health club", because "there are not enough women", I think he's lost it but he is far from depressed. ^_^
